Why do you train? [gym rats thread]

Disagree. I wouldn't pile on 1 & 1/2 stone or more throughout the winter months if I wanted to look good for the girls. I do it solely for strength and to better my lift PBs.

...which leads to your real goal: More muscle to show off to the birds which betters your chances of getting into their knickers.

You just haven't come to terms with this yet :p :D

Yeah I went with a green card, Ill have citizen in a year and a half so its all good.

I find living in the US is just SO much nicer,

Bigger houses
Cheaper cars
Cheaper food
Lower/no tax
Cheaper gas
Nicer roads
Everything is bigger
Nice scenary
Nice atmosphere
Nice girls
Nice girls
Nice people
Nice girls
Cheap protein cough 7lb tub of muscle milk for $30

Everything is just better.
... but it's full of yanks... ;):p:D

My main motivation for doing that would be because it is unisex (:D) and just having those pretty faces would definitely give me a higher drive to attend the gym more often/physically try harder etc... The only downside with that is that it will probably cost twice as much and is not as local as the first gym (say another 2 miles travelling).
d
Do you think its worth it? :p

Not worth it.

I used to goto a gym like that which FreeFaller's deadlift video was taken, ie. not glamorous, mostly males, etc. The good thing with those gyms are that there are fewer posers (and people) and those who go there are there for genuine reasons. Its also cheaper.

The gym I goto now is the closest to my house, but unfortunately is a nice gym, hence there are a lot of females. This increases the price and encourages the male posers to attend and waste my time when I want to go on the machines/weights. I'd love it if they could give me a key to the gym so I could go when its shut, early in the morning at around 1am. But thats another story.

I guess it depends if you want to work out or just ogle/pose. Only you can honestly answer that question.

I doubt that the amount of muscle you are carrying has any relationship with the amount of women you pull. Just look at the lists of the most attractive men out there and you will barely ever find the bodybuilder types up there. I think Vin Diesel is the exception. I cant think of anyone else. The rest are slim dudes.

If he really wanted to do it for the women, then he would abandon the weight gain phase in the Winter and just stay lean, visit as many clubs and places where you find drunk females. This would increase his chances. Adding muscle, wont.

Bizarrely enough, I find that its mostly men who admire other men with over-muscled physiques. ;)

Edit: I'm asian too, & I'm just trying to set the scene before anyone jumps the gun :o

I'd have to say not worth it, I don't go to the gym to try and pick up girls while I'm there and I'm not trying to look good while I'm in there (fortunately as I usually look like a sweaty mess). If I can look good when I'm out the gym that is great but if I look good in there it is purely accidental. Your sort of gym sounds ideal for me, cheaper and with more weights and less competition for them but nothing like that exists round here that I've found yet.

However you, quite obviously, aren't me so if having eye candy around would motivate you more then by all means go for it. You might even find it a good place to meet girls if that is an aim.

Or if that sort of thing does motivate you, buy yourself a copy of FHM (or similar) and look at the pictures in between sets. ;)

Err, no. I do it for the enjoyment, the sense of achievement and the fact that it motivates me generally. Couldn't give a flying **** what women think about me, or how attractive I am to them.

If you're enjoying it then you're not pushing yourself hard enough yet :p

I do agree that building your numbers up on lifts is a great motivator most definitely, but at the end of the day, they're just numbers. The real goal in bodybuilding is to improve your appearance. Thats what bodybuilding is.

There's really only one valid reason to improve one's appearance, and thats because there's women in the world. God bless them.

If women didn't exist i doubt anyone would do it :D

Nope. Bodybuilding is about building as much muscle as possible, in the first instance. Once you have packed on enough, you fine tuning your body and looking for weak areas and symmetry.

Its not about improving your appearance, as in most cases, once you reach a certain point, you begin to look like a freak.

For me its about pushing my body to its limit. I enjoy this. Just as enjoy pushing my mind to the limit (I do psychometric/IQ tests for fun and love RTS games for the same reason - because they challenge my mind). Its not to show off to anyone.

In my case, I have vowed to remain single and celebate for the rest of my life. Its just how it is. Yet I continue to push my body and mind to their limit.

If you look at FreeFaller's deadlift vid, do you honestly believe that many, if any, women have seen it? Why on Earth would he bother?

There are a lot of men and women out there who train hard for their own reasons (not involving sex). A lot of these people are happily married, with families and have no intention to attract a mate. Yet they train.

If it really was about looking good for the women, then I'd think the time and money could be better spent on plastic surgery, hair-replacment (if balding), hair dressers, clothes and hanging out in bars/clubs to pick-up women. Bodybuilding would be pretty low down in that list.

I'm with sunama, I'm married and have been with the same woman for over 12 years... I certainly don't put myself through all the hard work and graft for the sake of a few admiring glances!!

I train because I love the whole package that comes with such a sport, the discipline, healthy lifestyle, playing around with supplements to help push further and harder, pushing myself to the limit... to the point of breaking at times lol. Pure madness really but I suppose it suits me :)

We aren't all Shallow Hals :p

I'm with myself. All personal battles are with myself with one foot in the gym being one step closer towards my goals. Everything else is either coincidental or bye the bye ;)

I've been in the gym with admiring crowds of teenage girls around me and the rather peculiar and flattering comments from male gym members telling me I ought to be careful otherwise I'll end up looking like Arnold SW.......... The former is not the reason why I was there.

I would post the reason why i decided to start working out, but it would make me sound like a 5 year old, and due to my Englishness i manage to get embarrassed even over the internet.

We've had people claim that its only about the women. Now I claim that if thats your motivation then you are a bicep & pec boy regardless if you do squats or deadlifts (incidentally I see the V-shape more aesthetic than a barrel chest).

If weightlifting makes you feel good about yourself then that equation doesn't have to involve women.

If women find you attractive because you workout then its a bonus but at the same time other women may be put off and my Mum always said she doesn't like muscles.

Finally me and Jeff agree on something!!:)

Sunama, you keep using FF deadlift vid as an example of him not doing it for the women but its not the *actual* training that impresses the chicks its the results, the mass, the definition. I (and I guess the others) couldn't give a **** whether any chicks see me training, were that the case we'd be training for 6hrs a day to maximise exposure not training at high intensity for short duration.

The thing you've got to understand is there are hundred of activities out there that will keep you fit, test your motivation and determination but the thing about lifting is you end up looking better. All the regulars round here are, lets face it, addicted to the gym but what made them step into a gym rather than running or learning a martial art or swimming or playing hockey? The answer is because they wanted to be bigger and stronger. I'm suggesting that invariably the motivation for that was the opposite sex, the fact they're now unable to remember that because they're helpless junkies is moot! ;)

i get a lot more attention from women these days. You look healthier and something in them (probably the clitoris) screams "Impregnate me you hulking great slab of genetic gold" but then im so very pretty to boot :D
