Why does ATI limit overclocks and Nvidia do not.

I though it was common knowledge there is absolutely noway to know if a card has been clocked or not, a bios flash is a dead give away, so that excuse holds no water.

But now your getting into the morality of returning hardware you have or have not killed.

Regarding powerplay and unofficial overclocking, yes there are known issues with flash content and HD content, it's in the afterburner readme, see all the hoops you need to jump through to overclock your expensive ATI card.

Jigger turns on overclocking. Jigger turns off overclocking.

I doubt there's many people who care enough. Overclocking is becoming more common and many manufacturers start to enable it as standard. Unless you mod a card, I don't think you should worry about RMAing it if it fails. All within reasonable limits that is.

Not an issue any more, new Afterburner 2.0 fixes hangs with flash acceleration turned on :)

@ kylew Yes I have an issue now having gone to a 480 and clocking no problem and then when I think back to my 5870 and having to flash my bios to exceed the stingy 50Mhz they gave on a £300 card, it makes me think Nvidia are more consumer supportive.

Hahaha! Surely that's a joke? We all know they don't give a crap about "the consumer".

It seems like common sense to me so they can protect the 'average' user from accidentally over overclocking and bricking their card. The 'experts' however will know how to circumvent the limits and will bear all consequences if something goes wrong

All I see is raven making enemies again.

But on a positive note, the limits are probably there to retain the low heat, low power consumption philosophy.

Overclocking does not brick a card, go to far and the card simply locks up and the driver recovers, GFX 101.

Aye but they all used to be on his side backing him up on the ati threads lol hypocrites :D

Wow, this thread is amazing. :p

Raven, have you not got any games to play on your gtx480? Or are you getting so much stuttering in bfbc2 to the point where you have to come on here and find yet another reason to bash ati?

By all means do what you wish. Though, I think this is a bit of a mute point for a thread. There are a number of ways around it, you know there are yet still debate something hardly worth debating. I however will return to some games on my problem free 10.8's on overclocked 5870's at 1000/1225 through the ccc without any 3rd party apps. ;):p

Lol thats just fan boy's for ya , works both way's look at all the Nv fan's who only a month or so ago would'nt take anything he was sayin as truth and called BS.

Now They all seem to take anything he's sayin as gospel and are in total agreement :D:p

Tbh dont think ive seen anybody who can argue both side's of the coin like Raven before , he's making normal fb's look quite good :p

As has been referenced a few times, I've always believed Overdrive is limited compared to what can be achieved by 3rd party means is because it's more accessible. Dependant on the card, many won't reach the maximum clocks in overdrive.

Along with the auto tool, its more aimed at minor enthusiasts, or gamers who want a bit of a boost without going extreme, a mainstream overclock if you will, thus the limits.

It may also factor in card expected lifespans to an extent.
Overclocking at high frequencies over extended periods CAN indeed kill cards, not just cause artifacts/GPU recover.
Remember how many cards died when Doom3 came out? haha

Credit where credit's due, he does post occasionally some good material but the ratio of 'pap' to good hasn't been great recently. ;)

Haha! I love you guys! Doesn't matter what I say to him, he's got me on ignore. I like how he just puts ppl on ignore if he doesn't like anothers view or opinion instead of defending himself.

What a joke!

Anyway let's stay on topic shall we!

Raven do not let any of these thred trashers tell you what you can and can not discuss. You raised a valid point for discussion and yet again i am afraid to say the ATI brigade arrive feeling they have to justify everything by pulling you and the subject down.
Oh no I'm not a part of any brigade, it's just something completely pointless to complain about, it's easily fixed and there is a valid reason why it's there, you're also unable to do everything for a better overclock with Nvidias drivers and software but let's ignore that because I'm trying to bash ATI.

I have no brand loyalty, my last cards have gone, ATI, ATI, Nvidia, Nvidia, ATI and I've seen pointless moaning from both sides while having owned all those cards.

Please please stop putting an apostrophe after every word ending in the letter "s".

Green = good :)

Red = bad :(
