Why does the UK hate cyclists?

I think the cyclist hatred is caused by a minority of cyclists who have the helmet cams that shout at drivers and put the footage on YouTube, along with flouting road laws.

When driving I'll treat a cyclist the same I would if I were overtaking a car, however one of the the things that annoys me is when I'm in slow moving traffic and a cyclist comes past quickly and close to the car, along with the cycling through red lights and using the pavement, although some cyclist videos have been used to prosecute for various things in recent years. The thing they should remember is they are a road user so the same rules apply.

As mentioned previously in this thread, they should have at least 3rd party insurance, perhaps on A or B roads only though as not only would it be difficult to police in residential areas, it's also how a lot of children learn to ride bikes. For safety reasons they should have a high-viz jacket on and a helmet. I'm sure it would be difficult incredibly to police, but for A & B road usage some form of registration plate, the downside to this would however be that it's incredibly difficult to police and very open to cloning, and I doubt police would be able to identify different types of bike compared to cars where it's easy to identify a Vauxhall Astra from a Ford Focus.

It is a fair point really, a bicycle basically qualifies as a zero emission vehicle like an ev does, the whole tax argument is definately pointless.

So is mot tbh, except for kids messing around within the confines of their housing estates anyone on the road seems to have a pretty good handle on keeping their brakes/tyres in good enough nick (random punctures picked up during the journey notwithstanding)

Pretty much the only thing i'd want mandatory for cyclists is 3rd party insurance on public roads.

Indeed, it can be a tricky call sometimes although i think in a lot of cases folk just cant get their head around slowing down and staying behind cyclists if theres no safe way of overtaking.

Its like the old "i hate it when cyclists ride 2 abreast", which tbh is basically the same obstacle as getting caught behind a tractor only with more visibility yet somehow its meant to be the worst thing ever.

Yea but tractors will usually pull over to let traffic pass, or are only going a very short distance. You can actually be fined for backing up excessive amounts of traffic.

Oh right, so we can’t generalise about inconsiderate tractor drivers, but cyclists are fair game. Keep it up.

They do own the road, the road tax helps build and maintain them.

Most cyclists i've come across are arrogent *********. There only one guy at work who cycles everywhere and he's a total narcissist

If you bothered to read the rest of my post, the penny might have dropped that there is no such thing as road tax.

Either way, I'd imagine most cyclists have cars and pay VED...

Of course - just like only cyclists go through red lights.

The road network in the UK doesnt exactly lend itself to cyclists and drivers co-existing. Admittedly some places are better than others, but the majority of the country has no real infrastructure for cyclists, which results in them being considered a nuisance. Especially on roads where there is oncoming traffic and no room to pass, resulting in long queues of people stuck in a slow moving procession.

Add to that the general image of the cycling community which is portrayed mainly by loud mouthed idiots with cameras on their helmets who act like they are better than everyone else posting videos on Youtube, and you uave your answer.

Cyclists in London, most of them are *******. They spit at you if your in there way , kick off mirrors. and love a row.. Massive cycle lane all the way along the Embankment, it cost millions, lost a whole lane of traffic for a cycle lane right acoss the city and no bugger uses it !!!

Ultimately, as a society we need to be cycling more. Short distance i.e under 3 miles car trips are not good for anyone or anything other than adding to congestion, pollution and obesity. We need a culture shift, but this is not helped by the appalling lack of decent infrastructure and the outrage mentality which is so well evidenced by posters on here e.g. Robgmum & Chris Wilson

God help them if either came across a Muslim cyclist riding through a red light. They may explode (or at least start a thread about it on GD)

TL : DR

After a month the insurance company have pretty much decided I was fully culpable.
Yeah, I looked at the last page of the thread to see if it had been concluded. Pretty silly. He basically came out of nowhere. He was crossing a carriageway, you weren’t yet joining one. Typical insurance looking for an easy life.

I see a lot of very funny looking bikes going through red lights. They have four wheels and they’re massive. I mean, they must be bikes because only cyclists go through red lights. It also explains why I see them stopped in the asl boxes for cyclists.

I saw one this morning and have it on my dash cam

It was one of those 4 wheel BMW bikes.

you sure about that?

just because it's not gridlocked like the road next to it is doesn't mean it not used. Cycles take up very little space, compared to cars.. jammed in the traffic.. with one person it it, taking up 2x5m of space. Each.
