Why does the UK hate cyclists?

Another thing I've just thought of is actually a reason for why some cyclists ride their bikes so badly which in turn causes hatred of them is the state of the cycle lanes, certainly in Oxford they're terrible. I'm sure if the cycle paths/lanes were properly maintained the cyclists would be able to stick to them and be hated less because of it.

I don't hate all cyclists just hate the inconsiderate ones, same as all other road users. What I don't understand about some cyclists though it's so easy to get into a small mistake with a car and die so why do they read like they don't fear death?

if it happens, it happens. I'm not going to stop cycling "just in case"

You can have an accident in a car, 70mph and you're dead. Why don't you stay at home wrapped in bubble wrap>

If you bothered to read the rest of my post, the penny might have dropped that there is no such thing as road tax.

Either way, I'd imagine most cyclists have cars and pay VED...

Sorry to be pedantic, but road tax is slang for VED, hence why most people say RT despite it being replaced by VED before their birth.

Cycle lanes are frequently full of crap and with a terrible surface. Broken glass = fun times.

I didn't mean cycle in general but cycle like such a complete nob to get yourself in danger every 5 mins. I was going round a roundabout the other day when a cyclist just cycled straight onto it without even slowing, was pretty close to hitting her.

It’s one of those dangerous bits of slang, though, in that it totally misrepresents what it is, and perpetuates myths about what it is for.

Even if the cycle lanes were cleaned every day I wouldn't use them.

They are useless. Imagine going on a 100 mile car trip, but the road ends at the end of the drive. Can you continue? No.

No car driver has ever done this. Definitely not the drivers that I routinely have to watch out for joining roundabouts as I’m going round. Come to think of it they’re probably cyclists. After all, no car driver would ever join a roundabout without looking.

Most of the cyclists round here at night are weaving about the lanes, half cut, coming back from the pub. Given half the car drivers are too makes for some bizarre accidents. The number of banned drivers on electric bikes is notable, too.

 I didn't say that at all. it was in my relation to my point of how some cyclists ride when a small mistake could end in death. I suppose it's the same for motor bikes.

That's not really relevant to what he was talking about to be fair.

Recklessly putting yourself in danger in traffic on a bike and doing so in a car are vastly different levels of risk.

you know what the problem is? is the fact that very few cycle and drive.

I suggest those that struggle to understand how cycling feels to jump on a bike one week, commute a bit, ride on the weekend etc.. experience it :) you'll see the "other side" and then you'll change your mind big time.

I'm glad I cycled for so long before starting to drive, I never get annoyed by cyclists even when I have to sit behind one for 30 seconds to get a chance to safely overtake. Imagine how annoying that is! jeez.

One thing you gotta understand is that people make mistakes. But when a driver on purpose aims for me and my life flashed in front of me then I sit there wondering, what the hell is wrong with people? in charge of a 2 tones of metal with 0 responsibility.

The one's shoved in as an after thought also suffer from being in the part of the road where all the manhole covers live. Nothing I love more than a wet metal plate on my cycle to work. There's a cracker on a junction off Grays Inn Road (not actually in a cycle lane but still), they've done some pedestrianisation so it's kind of camouflaged. Long story short the first time I realised it was there was, coincidentally, the first time I totalled a Boris Bike.

I do both.

Conclusion - idiots everywhere

Round here they're lovely. Minus the odd dog egg. A lot aren't suitable for road bikes though, gravel surfaces, I used a cyclocross.

On my daily commute there is a building with a lot of work going on, scaffolding etc, only a small space for people to walk through, no way to see if anyone is coming around the corners yet cyclists still speed through there.

So they choose to gamble serious injury to themselves and others rather than take a clear road and cycling path right next to them, there is no logic to this at all.
