Why have people voted for Boris?

Becuase he isn't Ken Livingstoke and doesn't practice politics of envy.

Well it's a good job that idiots like you aren't in charge of the country...

I'm a Londoner and I would have much prefered Ken to stay in charge. However, he isn't.

The one good thing that Boris has done is to ask Ken to stay on his board and assist him, and Ken has agreed to do so.

Whilst Red Ken has done some harm to London he had a bloody good idea of how to improve this city. Boris was voted in as a reaction against the current Labour government. In his speech when he found out that he had won he cited Ken as his major influence and asked for his assistance to do his job as mayor.

That gained me more respect for Boris than any of his policies could have done.

I don't regret Boris being voted in as Mayor, I will only regret it if he doesn't listen to my fellow residents.

far better than someone who wants to shaft motorists and tinker with traffic lights

He's keeping the congestion charge. Though he has said that he wants to eliminate the western zone, to relieve the terrible financial pressures on the starving millions of Kensington and Chelsea, who, as residents, only pay 10% of the charge anyway (80p instead of £8).

So you see, he's really a socialist in disguise.

I like the idea that you people actually believe the mayor gets much of a say in what happens, this country is run by civil servants the mayor is just a public face for there policies. I glad Mr Livingstone got his marhcing orders his sheer egotistical arrogance alone was enough to rubber stamp it for me!

Because his hero is Pericles. Though, I doubt most people on this board (or in fact most londoners) know who Pericles is. I think Boris has the potential to be a great mayor and can give London the kick in the ass that it needs. If Ken had stayed in power London would have gone downhill faster than ever. No one should be in power for longer than a decade, unless of course they aspire to be an african dictator.

He's only the front man... The torys will be keeping a very close eye on the whole situation and will have a large team of planners to assist Boris!

I've felt an increased police presence around clubs and bars on a night since Boris has been appointed Mayor, maybe I was hallucinating.

As they put it on 'Have I Got News for You'...

Ken is a bafoon pretending to be an intelligent man, whereas Boris is an intelligent man pretending to be a bafoon, although not living in London I don't care either way.

Tbh, I think thats it down to a tee.

Similar thing applies towards George Bush, anybody who really thinks he's an idiot is seriously mistaken (to quote my American Cousin! )

Because his hero is Pericles.

So that means:

1) Higher taxes
2) Parthenon-like building projects (god knows London needs it after recent architectural disasters)
3) Successful war campaigns (?? :p )
4) Populistic policies
5) Being denounced as substance-less by commentators, such as Socrates or Plato

Great?!

Pericles was great because Athens was a self-sufficient city-state with a large dominion. London is not that, and unlike Pericles, Boris can not use foreign policy to woo the common man.

Jokes aside, other than populism, I can't see Boris achieving much.

God you sound just like my grandfather. Pericles was a charismatic statesman who was devoted to his city, promoted the arts and led it into it's golden age. He may have not been perfect in the eyes of his critics but what politician is? As far as I'm concerned, there is no statesman who is more worthy of respect than Pericles.

Athens thrived because Pericles used the Delian League and their naval supremacy to his advantage. Oh but clearly that's not good enough for you...

As for Boris, we shall see, but I think he will do a darn sight better than that corrupt idiot livingstone.
