Why is it i'm finding myself...

stole my words, i'd check the 1.8iS for insurance it mite be reasonable.

Well, I own the 1.8iS and although it's a higher insurance group, it costs a similar amount to the 1.6. It's the standard 1.8i that was the most expensive, for some reason.

I'd say the boot's just about big enough to fit a kid in, Phil...

Unfortunatly she's bright enough to know that the boot isn't a seat :D

/edit - Unless i say its a "special seat" ;)

See? You can make this work! :p

You could also get a boot rack, cable tie a seat to it and claim it's a new-fangled ventilated child health seat.

For some reason i dont think the missus would go for that, although i'm sure the little one would love catching flies :D

Mate, with respect, if you live at home with your parents, you dont NEED a car you simply WANT one, what has it got to do with your girlfriend what car you chose?

If you lived with her and owned a house with her fair doos but otherwise tell her to do one. My girlfriend would never try and influence the choice of a car bought simply for pleasure..

She's not tried to influence any of my decisions, actually :)

All she does is look at the picture of a particular car i'm looking at and says "oh, thats nice."

if on any car that is interesting the insurance is too expensive then why bother owning anything at the moment at all? Since you have access to another car why not just save up for something really tasty when your insurance bill wont be so stupid. Oh and the thing to do if your girlfriend doesn't like your choice of car is pretend you want to buy something really awful instead that she would absolutely hate. She will soon start saying that maybe your real choice isn't so bad.

Fox at his best.. so understanding... :) so naive...

It sounds very much like his girlfriend isn't telling him what to do, he's just being a normal 'decent' person and considering the girlfriends child..

If he excludes the child,. that as good as excludes the girlfriend, if they are both 'excluded', then the car becomes even more of an occasional use item.. or he just ditches the girlfriend.. which is about as stupid an idea as you can get..

I see his dilema though.. it's hard to find cars that are nice to drive, but cheap enough to run that being 'occasional' use is not too wallet denting, the same sort of thing happens with my motorbikes..

There is of course the larger engined 'sleepers' out there that are ideal for occasional use but have enough poke to be fun..

Larger engined sleepers are still likely to be Group 11 or above tho which the OP seemed to think would be a problem. I don't think there is any good answer to this as the impossible seems to be being asked.

Why not buy a cheaper older quick car with more expensive insurance than buying something mundane but newer and more expensive because the insurance is more, if that makes any sense :s an old

Yeah, this idea gets my vote.
I'm assuming people buy newer cars for reliability? (I have never owned a newer car :p)
But for a "fun" car, that is only going to be doing, what 2K-3K miles a year, reliability isn't going to be an issue anyway. surely?

Which brings us back to the fact that Fox pointed out, he either needs a car or doesn't.

His girlfriend has a car to ferry around her offspring.

Wayyy too big for my needs. I'd hav an MX5 if it wasnt the need for more than 2 seats, missus has a little one so need the seating space!

Doesn't she have a Corsa?

Phil - if you cant buy anything decent, live with that corsa. Wait until your accidents are 3 years in the past - then you're into cheap insurance-o-rama.
