Why is it that I can guzzle down food almost all day and not get fat?

I thought I ate a lot until I made some friends who are seriously into rowing. Just for comparison, my typical day might be:

Breakfast: Cereal + yoghurt
Snack: Fruit, or bread and cheese
Lunch: Jacket potato, yoghurt and fruit
Snack: Cereal bar
Dinner: Big meal, typically chilli or bolognese 'cause they're dead easy.
Supper: Toast with paté or cheese

A typical day for my friend, Chris, could easily be:

Breakfast: Porridge + protein shake
Snack: Sandwich
Lunch: 2 Jacket potatoes + yoghurt
Snack: Sandwich
Dinner: 2 Steaks, with huge piles of chips and mushrooms
Supper: Big bowl of pasta

The guy is a machine. He rows for at least 2 hours six days a week, plus weights and ergs 5/6 times a week. He definitively proves that if you do enough exercise, you don't get fat.

You guys are incredible...

Styles is 100% correct and everyone is ignoring what he is saying.

For starters those of you who are saying you eat loads are grossly incorrect. You don't. Certainly nowhere near enough to gain any weight for the average male.

Secondly you are all blaming your metabolisms. Again, incorrect.

A persons metabolism is determined mostly by their eating habits. Yes age does play a part, but it's your eating habits which make by far the biggest difference.

Think of your metabolism as a furnace. The more you feed it, the harder it burns. The less you eat the slower it becomes. It's a natural mechanism designed to promote fat storage in times of famine.

Obese people have on average the fastest metabolisms. Quite simply because they eat a lot of food very frequently. This is why dieticians recommend 5-6 smaller meals a day. Rather than the traditional three.

My daily diet consists of about 2-3 times the calories of most of you who seem to consider yourselves "big eaters". And that is just to maintain my current weight. My bodyfat tends to hover around 8-10% unless I am bulking, in which case I eat around 4000-4500 calories per day.

EDIT: Oh and AF, your friend Chris doesn't eat what I would consider to be a lot either mate. :p

If he ate an extra 500-750 calories a day he would probably balloon out and put on some serious muscle with little to no fat gain if he is working out that much.

Meh, I guesstimated based on meals that I've eaten with him. He easily eats twice as much as me, anyway! I might be motivated to ask him next time I see him.

As a rower, though, the aim isn't to seriously bulk out. Most rowers aren't huge, especially upper body. Massive legs, though.

Edit: Gordy, you gonna stick your diet up here? Come on, put us to shame. ;)

Edit: Wow, I just worked out how many calories I eat in a day. Around 2000, I reckon. I have no idea if that's a lot or not.

Me eating.

Morning.- Some times cereal
Lunch- Sandwiches
Dinner- Potatoes, Steak, veg.

Edit: Had a knorr vie today?? Those little drinks with fruit.

I personally find eating really boring. Sweets and chocolates dont interest me. And yes im under 18 :D.

I got measured in height. Im growing again. Im now 6' 3". Clock the scales @ 9 3/4 stones.

I dont look bulky, but have a lot of feature if that means anything. eg my body shows a lot of definition but there isnt much there.

Personally dont like it :(

For one week I ate

Breakfast- Cereal, Orange juice, FULL english breakfast
Break- Crisps, 2x chocolate bars, sandwiches
Lunch, Baguette, Chocolate bar, Coke
Dinner- 2 steaks with big bowl of chips, chocolate pudding desert, beer
Snacks of pringles through the night :D

Didnt put anyweight on. Didnt help me when I went to the gym either.

Absolutely mate, bulk isn't a good thing in all sports. I would imagine too much weight would be very detrimental to a serious rower.

This is what I have eaten today:

Meal 1 - 6 egg whites, 2 pieces of whole wheat toast, 4 slices of bacon, bowl of oats

Meal 2 - 150g lean ground beef, full fat cottage cheese, brocolli

Meal 3 - 150g chicken breast, 250g pasta

Meal 4 - 1 can tuna, 1 tbsp mayo, two slices wheat bread

Meal 5 - PWO 2 scoops whey, 80g Dextrose/Maltodextrin mix

Meal 6 - 300g chicken breast, 250g brown rice

Meal 7 - 3 slices wheat bread, 3 tbsp natural peanut butter

Meal 8 - 220g oats, cottage cheese

Around 4000 calories in total. Aproximately 300g protein, 300g carbs, 100g fat.

I don't log my diet as seriously as I used to but this is fairly representative of a typical day.

2000 is what an average female should eat to maintain her bodyweight. :)

How many calories are in:
3 slices of cheese on toast
Packet of softmints
Portion of chips
Chicken & mushroom pie

????
Less than 2000. Well over half of it is from the chips, which constitute about 900 calories and 50g of fat.

Finally someone else here who knows what they're talking about! Excellent post GordyR :)

But looking through this thread, I expect your words to fall on deaf ears.

And 2000 is the optimum?

Certainly not! 2000 is what your average woman should be eating every day in order to maintain her weight. An average male should be eating about 2500 depending on their current weight, just to stay at the weight they are at. An average 12 stone male would need at least 3000 calories per day in order to gain weight at a slow rate of 1-2lbs per week.

Thanks Styles, unfortunately, I think you're right again. :(

You are seriously underweight for your height mate.

I'm not surprised it didn't help. For starters, there is no protein apart from the full english breakfast. If you're working out you should be eating a good helping of protein every three hours.

Cut the crisps, chocolate and chips and throw in some chicken breast, beef, rice and pasta and up the calories by another 1000 or so and then you have a diet. :p

For anyone who wants to have an idea of how to construct a reasonable diet, take a look at my thread in the sports section. The diet section is not just for bodybuilders, it applies to everyone.

Weird, I couldn't in any way be described as skinny, and I do a fair bit of exercise. Maybe I just can't count my calories correctly. I don't ever think about my diet, I just eat when I'm hungry and try to keep it vaguely healthy. Maybe I should start paying more attention.

Most people do tend to count their calories incorrectly; forgetting to count what they are drinking seems to be the most common error. Other than that, bare in mind what I said about your metabolism. It could be yours has slowed due to the relatively low colorific intake you have.

How much do you weigh AF?

Its not like I excersize that much but i'm not couch potato. I just wonder sometimes how I can eat so much and not get fat! anyone else the same?

im 5, 11. and weigh just under 11 stone.

chuurs

I wasn't the same. I ate loads and got fat. 18st 11lbs at my heaviest.
I'm now 15st 06lbs @ 20% fat but eat a varied diet.

I'm going to stick my neck out and say your blood sugar levels are well regulated - even if it is by chance..

Am i doing alright gordy (see previous page) ive got a really good book and it suggest what i eat, and going through the list i eat most of that on a regular basis :)

I have no idea why I'm not 20 stone.

I eat absolute rubbish, 24/7. Chips all the time, pies, burgers, chicken, etc etc, drink absolutely loads of coke, and drive absolutely everywhere. Although I don't eat chocolate and snacks. Excercise involves sitting on the PC playing games or driving :p

6ft, 11 stone 10.
