Why isn't it recommended to get a diesel...

My 1995 1.4L 106 would routinely do 40-45mpg without trying, 45L tank, so that's 400-450miles on a tank.

I don't think 400 miles per tank is difficult in very many small petrol cars..

I once owned a 1.9TDI Seat Ibiza Cupra Which was the PD engine, used to see 40-52mpg quite easy, however, it was one of the worst cars to drive, loud rackety engine like a tractor, and like a tank to drive, considering it was supposedly the top of the line model it was awful - this coming from owning 5 of the Petrol Ibiza Cupras over the years, the MK4 1.8T Cupra was a great drive, but not very economical at all.

It has put me off diesels in fairness, even though I want to give them another try, the 1.9TDI has almost completely put me off, although I drove a 320d yesterday, still has the racket at idle (though not as bad as the VW 1.9) however during driving it was impossible to tell it was a diesel it was incredibly refined and a majorly smooth drive!

With regards to 400 miles + per tank, that does seem like diesel territory, as a while back, I had a hire car which was a Corsa 1.2 or something like that, and it did about 350 miles to a tank, and that was mostly driving gently as well!

The VW 1.4TSI engines are meant to be pretty good on the mpg (depending where you read) might be worth checking those out?

Hi, true but a 1.4 isn't in the same league as a 1.6 turbo with 150ps and 240Nm(177lb ft) that has as good economy....

400 miles a tank isn't diesel territory its big tank territory. I got 550 miles from my last tank and am heading for 500 from the current one.

Nice! How much does it cost to fully fill the tank?

It's not even big tank territory - I 'only' have a 55l tank in my petrol Focus and I'm currently at 480 miles with this tank and the fuel light hasn't come on yet.

I found the 1.4 TSI to be no where near as economical as it was meant to be. Averaging sub 30MPG.

I feel pretty bad reading this and getting just over 300 miles to 75 litres

I get ~300 miles out of a tank (to the light coming on) on my 1.25 Fiesta. Owners handbook states a 42/45L tank, yet even at the light I struggle to get >35 litres in there. I'm averaging around 40mpg.

Probably because the light comes on when you have a couple of gallons left. I got 44l in my Fiesta, mainly because I empted the tank to do the fuel pump and had to fill it up after.

I had 2 seat Leons with the 1.9 diesel, one with the DPF and one without. Always found the MPG decent, but I do 25k a year. Milage is all to and from work, at my cost, so I have to take mpg into account.

I Got a 6 month old Leon Copa at the end of March with the 1.6CR engine. The mpg can be good, but nowhere near manf numbers.
I have done just over 5k since I bought it and my average mpg is 57.8 according to the on-board readout. On a recent trip to Scotland, i got just over 700 miles on a single tank. Average is around 590.

As an experiment on a quiet evening, I tried to see what could be achieved on my way home by driving differently. Think Clarkson in the Audi. Got 71.1 mpg on a 58 mile journey. I stress however, this is something I will never, ever repeat. My car is boring enough as it is. :D

Not had any DPF issues so far. I had the 1.9DPF for 3 years. Perhaps its the fact that I`m on the A1m for 40 miles of my journey.

Re the 1.4 petrol. I normally get a Petrol Ibiza with the 1.4 engine as a loan car whilst mine is in for service. The fuel economy is awful. Less than 40mpg even on a good run.

As I said earlier our work vehicles on the airport are VW caddys. CR DPF. Last night the emergency regen light came on, that vehicle had done less than 500 miles since new. :D

Whoever at my work put the purchase order in for those vehicles which do less than 5000 miles in 3 years wants shooting :D

I used to reguarly get 420 with my old 1.2L Punto (47 litre tank) and get about 440 with my 1.4 Punto Evo (45 litre tank) and I have never gone to less than a gallon on my current car. My old car I once got to 500 miles on a tank but I had about half a litre left in the system, ah the days of surviving on student loans...

Ive just bought a Leon pd150. I use to own a Fiesta ST. I put £30 worth of diesel in and with a bit of thrashing got 200 miles out of it. Doing the same with my ST I would be looking at tops 150miles.
Now I know thats not a massive difference but its still a big enough difference for me on saving the pennys.

Dont get me wrong I love petrol engines and wish that I didnt have to sell the Fiesta but the cost of Tax, insurance and petrol was just annoying me so much that I made the change. Dont get me wrong if I could pick up an ek9 type r for the same price I paid for the Leon I would have bought that as I love them.

Also I dont do that many miles about 15 there and back from work but on long journeys like going to the seaside the economy is great. I bought the car from Nottingham and drove it back to Leeds. Got 60mpg out of it. Pretty good as my Fiesta doing a similar run only managed 38mpg and that was going at 65mph.

You do need to look after a derv more but it does reward you in the end if you decide to go to the other side of the country for a day out or something.

I would like to add that a remap diesel is awesome. My mate has a 2.2 Civic type s and blimey its fast. Power throughout the range.

The ST Fiesta gives out 179 grams, hardly a lot more than the 146 grams for the Leon. £215 vs. £135 tax a year saves you just £80.
Surely a PD150 Leon will be similar on insurance too? The Fiests is group 26 and the Leon 25.
The PD VAG engines are really tractory and shake the vehicle.
The Leon is rated at 52mpg and the Fiesta at 38mpg, not a big difference at the pump!

I certainly don't think badly of your PD150 Leon, I just don't understand why you made the change other than it is bigger.
