Why not remake old games?

System Shock (the original not SS2). Played SS2 to death with and without the Rebirth mod. Tried to play SS1, but it is tough. You can't re-map the keys and need about 6 fingers on each hand to play it. Very deep RPG. Would be a classic with today's graphical polish

For some reason 8 gets a lot of hate, but I thought it was brilliant. 9 is probably my personal favourite tho. Was more difficult, which is good, and a good mix of humour and tragedy. I like the fact that 9 gave me a good few "game over" moments right from the very first boss fight.

Atm I'm playing through 10 again, and it's soooo easy. Annoying, really.

I thought it was 9 that got all the hate. I know 8 was unpopular because it followed 7 (even though i liked both) but i couldn't stand 9.

10 was a great game just easy. I remember playthroughs where i intended to overkill absolutely everything, was always fun when i used Auron and Tidus (on Aurons path) with Yuna as a Black/White Mage and was hitting for 9999 by Seymour MK II.

9 was irritating as hell. The Trance system was unbelievably turd - quite rare in the first place, and apart from the scripted Trances, it only ever kicked in toward the very end of a routine fight - often after you'd already ordered the killing blow with another character. Nice idea, but the execution was terrible. I did love the skill & eidolon system, good memories of the espers from VI, but I found I didn't want to play with most of the characters. If I could have done the entire game with Amarant, Garnet and Freya, I would have. Also, the story kinda petered out and the final boss came out of nowhere with a legendary 'luLz, I am become Deaf and cannot hear!' that just didn't fit in too well.

8 was far, far too easy but aside from that pretty awesome.

I got thinking today after a quick play of Quake 2 on Steam how many great games never get played now because of either incompatabilty problems or awfully dated graphics.

Take the Half Life Black Messa mod -how great to play the originol HL but with modern graphics.
Why not have c+c Tiberium Sun with modern graphics yet exactly the same game instead of that rubbish they just rtealeased?

So the question is......how many people would go out and buy a re release with a modern engine? And how many younger gamers would get the new experience anyway as they missed out first time round?

That's what new games are, surely? Old concepts with shiny new graphics? There's no need to remake old games when that's exactly what they're already doing. Anyway there have been a few "remakes" and they have all sucked. They have tried to remake UFO: Enemy Unknown a couple of times and IIRC they were all pants.

Oh, I forgot the obligatory list of "games they need to remake": :)

Daggerfall
Elite
Jagged Alliance/JA2

With regards to the UFO/XCOM comment... That's because none of these were part of the Xcom license. I played UFO Aftermath (for a short while ;)) and had the thought, "this isn't XCOM" constantly trumpeting in my head. :( It just felt like a cheap knock off and whether that's justified or not, I don't know. Maybe it was the time, my love of all things Microprose/Mythos or just plain old skool rose tinted spectacles affecting my judgement?

Jagged Alliance 2 is a great call. "Elliot! You iiiiiidiiiiot!" :D

We could also recreate a full-scale Endor battle :p dozens of capital ships and hundreds of fighters buzzing around, with a full 3D Death Star blasting away ;)

"It's a trap!" I'll go wipe myself down. :o

I'd actually be against a remake of final fantasy 7, without its quirky old style graphics it wouldn't be the same

BUT what i would like is a film made of final fantasys exact story, rather than a before/after like we currently have, that would be AWESOME!

why? if like me you have completed it like 10 times (amazing game) why get a film made about a game that has been played so much that you will know the EXACT story of it?

I agree on not remaking FF7 !UNLESS! they added more content, such as new locations, magic, summons, monsters, side quests and such then i would buy that right away!

I wish someone would hurry up and do it to Final Fantasy 7 so I can get on and play this apparently incredible game without it looking like a Playmobil scene. Im not an all graphics no substance kind of guy but I have limits!

Best game ever imo, they need to release a remake nao!

And they should remake Z, the original, still fun to play today !

nooooo, think of the phrase "if it's not broke, dont fix it", i reckon any changes to that game would be bad, it's such an epic piece of gaming history that to change it would be an absolute tragedy!

Perhaps make a FF7 part 2 like they did with 10...but not **** it up like they did with X-2 but by no means should they ever change the original

As for not making it a film because it's been played to death, i can't say i'll ever get bored of that storyline, so to have it in a film would be awesome!
