Why soo cheap

is it nto correct that PCI Express slots do in fact give more power to PCI-E cards so in threory more would be needed from the PSU!
SO the PSU would be the prob that was discussed ealier but could it be anything to do with the speed of the PCI-E slot itself?
whats the exact name of the Mobo because do a lot of these dual input mode mobos not run PCI-E slot at only 4x compared to the standard 16x slot?
It's certainly the case with an Asus board and one ASRock one

Hi guys,

well Ive tried everything, changing things in the BIOS etc, but I cant see why AGP settings should matter to PCIe cards, there are absolutely no settings to change for it apart from which one is Primary.

The mobo is the Asrock DualSATA, with the AGP & PCIe slots on it. Just about to try the 6800 my friend lent me, not sure what I am hoping for, it to crash again or work.

Its also a full PCIE 16x slot as per motherboard.

There are no drivers for it either, but I guess its linked to the motherboard ones.

EDIT:

PSU is now an Antec TruePower 480w so there should be no problems there.

the x800 doesnt have an external power adaptor.

OK the 6800GT works fine, no lock ups so far.

Only thing different is that it has an extra power connector....

What needs sending off? gfx or mobo?

hmmmmmmmmmmm weird but is the 6800gt a pci-e or agp part?
if pci-e then look to get another card but if agp then i think ** pci-e slot may have some problems!

6800GT is PCIE, which is the weird thing

I cant really send the card back cos 99% chance it will work fine on their test system. :(

Cant really swap this card for his 6800gt as it costs more and its bloody noisy!

Id ask for an RMA as its not working mate, and you have tried everything we can think of really!
was the other asrock mobo i weas thinkin of earlier btw ;)
You could easily get another card sent out to you and then check again!
Just gonna have to bite the bullet and send that card back...no doubt the second one will work ;)

Yeah I think I will, just a really odd problem, oh well, least ive still got hte old card that works :p

Will fill out an RMA tomorrow I guess.

Cheers for the help :)

Was going to make a new thread till I re-found this one.

I have one of these Powercolor X800GTO 256mb cards here, ATI tool says it's a R430 and given the above posts I'm thinking that's accurate.

The card displays the same problem on an Asrock 939 dual Sata board. Hard freezing the computer once the Cat drivers (even omega's) are installed.

This same MB has used a 9800pro (AGP), a 6800nu (AGP, unlocked) and a 7800GT PCI-E with no problems.

The card seems fine running on a Gigabyte 945p-G motherboard.

I've tried just about everything possible from different MB bios to changing the settings to wierd things and nothing changed. It could be the PSU but based on what it's done so far I'm suspecting more likely that the board or PCI-E slot isn't supplying the amount of power that it should do and since (unlike the other cards used) it has no additional power connector the card is failing as soon as it's stressed.

I've read about others having the same problem, just wondering if anyone else has info about this issue as there are people using this MB with a X800GTO (though maybe not a powercolor one) without problems.

Next thing I might try is pulling out a PSU from another machine which is a bit more powerful...just such a pain to do :p

Wow, Im glad I found someone else with this problem, and its not just me thats having the issues. I made a thread in the motherboard section about this:

http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=17563138

If you wouldnt mind putting in your specs in that thread aswell as here that might help us (well me :p) out. This is a very irritating problem as it just seems to be incompatability between these two parts in a system, they both work fine with other systems etc. Ive emailed Asrock about it as well as OcUK but nothing back from Asrock and only a small email from OcUK.

My thoughts are that its the power connection or lack of, on the card, but the problem also points to software.

EDIT: wouldnt bother with the PSU, I bought a new one and its the same problem.
