Why Windows 10 and DirectX 12 Represent a Big Step Forward for Gaming

I am proper looking forward to seeing what DX12 brings. I don't expect massive performance games but turning the effects up to 11 should be sweet. Hopefully some PC exclusives built around DX12 are in the works and we can see the true potential of this new API.

Agree Greg. It should boost some spotlight onto PC gaming where the detail can be utilised to its potential (not that the PC gamers here dont know that - but for people starting out, returning from consoles or comparing it to consoles they will appreciate it).

I've been pleasantly pleased with DX10 so far, I moved to DX 10 pro the night before last and so far I haven't hit a single snag. Everything is running fine (Touch wood).

;)

there is talk of win 7 getting dx12. hopefully this happens. win 10 is dire.

Dire?

I wouldn't say so.

Upgraded my old Core2Duo Laptop with Win10 Pro and it flies along now. Full install is also 10GB(!) less than Windows 7 Ultimate. Yes, the UI experience is a little inconsistent, but the OS itself is very solid. In Pro, the "phone home" stuff can be disabled, as can the immediate Windows updates.

Not exactly sure what is "dire" about Windows 10? Sure, I'll be leaving my desktop on Win7 for now, and tracking progress of 10 for the next 6 months on my lappie, but Win10 is far from dire.

I have not seen anything to make me stand in awe of directx12.

Win 7 will do me fine for now, maybe in 3-4 years time I will make the move but
not worth it at the moment.

From what I have read DX12 is windows 10 only and will not be supported in any other version.

Was in not the same with windows XP and DX11?

I can understand waiting 6-12 months, but with windows 10 being a free upgrade for the next 12 months, waiting longer than that doesn't make much sense... Besides which in 3-4 years there will be another later version, so are you going to pay to upgrade to 10 when everyone else is moving to 11 (presumably with DX13)?

I switched to Win 10 last night, I need to try a few others like Deadpool on Steam and Mass Effect 1 on U-play (My Steam copy works, go figure) which will not work since I moved from Win 7 to Win 8.1. It'd be nice if they miraculously started working again.

I tried booting up and playing Deadpool on Win 10 and it works again so that's great news giving it browny points over Win 8.1 for me.

EDIT: I got it right this time.

Highly doubt this will happen as the whole OS would need to be reworked.

I loved Windows 7 as I had that think skinned to the hilt with everything you could imagine, Custom media player skin, Windows skin, Windows sounds, Dreamscene etc etc... but moving to Windows 10 has honestly felt like a de-clutter and with the performance it brings is welcome not forgetting to mention there is no start screen anymore :)

The xbox one wishes it ran a 7850

The Xbox One has a GPU that’s similar to the entry-level Bonaire GPU in the older Radeon HD 7790, while the PS4 is outfitted with the midrange Pitcairn that can be found in the HD 7870.

I think it was DX10 and Vista?

The win10 upgrade is okay really. took me hours to set up but worth it in the end. A few little problems here and there. I can no longer move VLC media player video stream forwards and back with my g700 side buttons, a small thing but it's actually really annoying to me. Sound has a hissy fit every now and then for like half a second, stuttering I guess you would call it. Gaming is the same as, a 100 or so extra points in 3dMark although seems to be a slight loss on very high end gaming setups. I like the new Start menu after a few hours of configuration, the Start menu is my primary means of navigation, program launch etc. Bit annoying having to use the search bar to get to a few things that where only a few clicks away in 7, I'm such a mouse jocky these days.

Consoles for you, at least back then they launched with High end GPU equivalents, compared to now.

I think they should have done that again this time and sold the consoles at a small loss again, while recouping money on game sales. Instead they sent out lacklustre hardware, and are making a tiny profit on each sold.

The problem is that while the PS3 was based on a high end Nvidia GPU,but had half the ROPs,lower clockspeeds and massively lower memory bandwidth,so in reality the performance was closer to a midrange GPU.

The same goes with the Xenos in XBox360 - it also had a limited amount of ROPs too.

Plus when they both launched, the tools for making games using more than one thread well were severely lacking and they had very poor single threaded performance. The RAM limitation was a major issue with the older consoles even at launch, and originally they were both meant to have 256MB of RAM!!

In reality the newer consoles are as much of a jump forward someways as the previous ones. Why?? They are FAR easier to programme for and optimise for. The previous consoles were not. They were problematic especially in the case of the PS3.

On paper everything looked good, but in reality it was a different kettle of fish.

Plus due to being based on a standised PC uarch I would expect the current consoles to be have a shorter lifespan too,as it will be easier to update them in a few years time.

At least that way they won't be holding back PCs as much as the last generation IMHO!!

dx12 is the only thing making me want to use windows10
ive been trying it out on my laptop so far, plan on installing it on a ssd and put on my games machine either today or tomorrow

not a fan of the ui, they made some stuff so difficult to get to, having to use the search box to find settings you need is the sign of a really bad ui i say!
...maybe i will learn to love it.. ><

You realise there is a settings button in the bottom right? :D

I'm loving windows 10, much quicker than 7. Hated windows 8.1, got that on my laptop no home button is horrible until I installed startdock or something.

Not had a single problem with stability, drivers and it's really easy to use. Although Spartan browser or whatever doesn't like BF4 online thing.

Dx12 should be good for us gamers, as said we've got some big comes this year, hopefully we'll get some games that work on release :)

With windows 10 being a free upgrade I cant see the point of sticking with 7(or 8).
Depends on which version?, the windows 10 home 64-bit i upgraded and tested out was good and has potential but unfortunately there was no option to select manual windows updates, sometimes there can be issues with updates especially graphics drivers, that's not good for enthusiasts or those that prefer to choose what they download and install on their machines. So that's a no free upgrade and go for me unless microsoft change their minds about the auto download feature?.

I've disabled driver updates in Win 10.

lol going bottom right is the crazy slow way around!!
right clicking the start button ive been using a lot, probably the only thing that stopped me installing classicshell over the top of their hard work^^;

I have stuck with Windows 7 still and have heard win 10 is poor by quite a few people. I hope dx12 does come to win7

Ive heard quite the opposite and more importantly to me...installed it myself and love it. I have not even got round to clean installing it yet as all my games and programs still work after the upgrade. Im going to wait until Ive finished GTAV before I clean install but everything runs smooth as butter

The only random problem Ive encountered is that the right trigger of my XB1 pad now reverses instead on accelerates in GTAV and yet my PS4 pad is fine!

Such a bizarre bug :D
