Every damn charger I've ever had. This is barely 5 months old as well.

Just why

No idea. GFs is like this too but not as bad and still works.

Maybe you should be a bit more careful with them then?

Wake up, remove, put in bag, plug in at work, remove, go home, plug in, sleep. Repeat.

Cheap ****e from Apple.

I'm going to guess it's when it's plugged in and I use it then put it face down, then use it again and put it face up, etc etc, just twists the cable.

Don't pull the wire, pull the connector itself, should be fine then. It's not ideal but at least it won't break then.

If you have Apple care, you'll be able to get a replacement for free. I did. And mine was nowhere as bad as that.

They really need to fix their cables.

Hahaha :D. Not laughing at your misfortune, rather Apple.

I mean it looks like they've literally just freely fed the cable into the connector collar with absolutely no kind of strain relief mechanism, it's just stuck on at the point where wire meets the connector's headers. Oh dear.

I have cables up to 20 years old which I've been pulling at the cable. If you use industry standard cable relief which has been around for decades to stop precisely this, this wouldn't be a problem.

I agree, but as it clearly is a problem then perhaps it's best to be a bit more careful, even if you shouldn't have to be.

Say the cable started to smoke and it burnt through the plastic... (This genuinely happened with one of my apple cables and they replaced it there and then, no questions asked - bar the 200 question safety sheet)

I had to return my charger to Apple when they sent the new one out under AppleCare. So if you tell them it started smoking and burnt through the plastic, they're going to be looking for evidence of a fire hazard when you return it.

Failures of this nature are so common there was a class action law suit in the US to get chargers replaced (or people compensated for having to buy new ones). And it's something Apple haven't bothered fixing either. It's plagued all power cables before the suit and since. You just have to contact Apple, mention that the cable has frayed and they should replace it. If you walk into a store and they refuse to replace it, all you have to do is mention loudly that you thought it was a continuing problem since said class action lawsuit and they will quickly do the swap.

I've had 8 devices that use the Apple connector, 6 of which were the old 30 pin variety and an extra longer cable but that was from Philips. Only 1 of the 30 pin cables shows signs of wear, of which the covering near the connector is loose. I really don't understand how the sort of catastrophic damage shown in the OPs photo occurs unless lots of strain is placed on the connector.

This is absolutely you. Nothing wrong with Apple cables, I've had so many that if there was some fundamental issue with them I'd have managed to do this.

Instead I have a drawer full of old ones that are in perfect nick but I can't find a reason to bin them.

Sure, the tension relief isn't anywhere near as good as it should be, however you're very, very obviously mistreating it if it's like that after 5 months.

Last cable I just binned was used for three years and had a tiny split.
