Why is it dumb? If people want a microwave to use an an actual microwave, its no use stealing a broken one, so breaking it stops theives. Why should other people get to benifit from something he spent money on, its his stuff, he can do what he likes with it.

Cast iron is worth enough for people to steal drain covers!
I know but some people will steal anything10-20p per Kg last time I took some in

Dunno but I took in a cast iron bath a few weeks back and got £5 for it. Took 2 of us half an hour to shift the thing out of the house! Makes you wonder why they bother sometimes.
or it can be sold/given to someone who will recycle it. Which is a much better option imo then leaving it fully working, only to have someone steal it.
If you're going to give it to someone to recycle, why break it? That's just making extra work for them, possibly meaning that it's no longer worth the bother.
It doesnt have to function to be recycled. And as long as you only damage it to stop it working, not to the point where its difficult to apart then it shouldnt make any difference at all to a person recycling it.
I assume if you were worried about it being stolen it was outside. Surely if it’s out in the rain etc it is going to be pretty much ruined anyway? If you are that bothered why didn’t you keep it somewhere safe, or try and sell it in the local paper or somewhere?
My mind is boggling at the idea that you would intentionally damage something that you are chucking out and no longer want. If it's that big a deal, just take it to the tip straight away instead of leaving it outside your house. Good grief.

I sold a cast-iron bath to a guy who re-enamels them about 9 years ago for £200, would have got more but one of the fancy feet was chipped, they're probably worth a lot more now!£5!!!
This one was old, knackered and cracked and we had no way to get it out of the bathroom without it being in pieces. When you've got 2 days to strip and re-fit a whole bathroom you tend not to be bothered about saving the old stuff

If something ends up getting recycled why do you care how it gets there? It can get there broken, which makes no difference, or it can be still working, in which case some theiving git can potentialy steal it for free, which is not what i would want if i ever had a microwave to get rid of.

For starters their is NO better method of recycling products than actually continuing too use it as designed in it's original state. ie ZERO extra c02 is generated other than what the device creates in use.
The problem myself and many people here have is the fact that some people are so sad and pathetic enough that they would rather smash something up than let 'someone else get something for FREE' even though they have no more use for it and can’t be bothered to sell it
An utterly putrid attitude to have in life and one you should be thoroughly ashamed of!
My mother would be completely disgusted if I or any of my brothers and sisters did something as pathetic and pointless as that!!
If i hav no use for something, and will not make any money from it, then i dont mind giving it to someone else for free as long as they have the decency to ask. If i have something that would simply get nicked if i put it outside due to not having room inside for it any more, then in my opinion i would rather have it broken and recycled, then nicked and reused.

Sorry, I have to explain myself here as I think people have misunderstood my statement a bit here.
I'm not pathetic, or self absorbed, I live in quite a rough area, and more often than not, when we put our rubbish out. We'll get people coming along, opening up our rubbish bags and taking anything that they deem valuable. Now dont get me wrong, I'm throwing it away, I don't want it anymore. But, I do object to people just strolling up to my house, strolling down my driveway, and then going through my rubbish. All without asking
Like I said, I donate to charity shops, give stuff to my neighbours, the only thing I object to are these people who crowd round outside my house and look through my rubbish bags or other stuff to get a freebie simply because they dont want to pay for anything themselves
If I lived in a better area it really wouldnt bother me
