Actually, I'm going to go the opposite way, and say that I reckon the PS3 will do better than it would have done had it launched earlier (say March/April this year as originally planned).
Remember E3 last year? We saw a Playstation with no hard drive, no standardised online service, no media centre capabilities, and no tiltable controller. It was just a giant Blu-Ray player with a dodgy-looking controller. This extra year gap has given Sony loads of time to realise what they were doing wrong with their original plan, and "borrow" (

) a few choice ideas from the competition. Yes they're stealing concepts, but those concepts will most likely end up making their console better, so regardless of whether they're original or not, they're still good ideas. A better console will sell more*.
In some ways, it's not the Average Joe Sony is worried about, because they know they still have the brand name recognition there. It's the fact that the Average Joe might get a bit wiser and investigate the competition. So they're offering abridged versions of what the other consoles offer in order to keep customers satisfied, or even win wome back from MS/Nintendo.
Personally, I'll be getting a PS3 at some point, partly because I've never owned a Playstation and with its backwards compatability thats a wealth of titles to explore, but with that same excellent back catalog comes the potential that many quality games will still come out. Those same quality gmes will again help a console sell*.
As for the original post, I remember reading that Nintendo were very strange about letting people into their show floor area, so the queues were slightly inflated because of it. Still, the Wii definitely stole the show, and it looks fantastic. I was always planning on getting one (Ninty fanboy at heart), but its even converted my PC-loving "graphicsarethebestestpartofagameomglookatcrysisitmustbegoodbasedonthatscreenshot" housemate, which is saying something. He was gobsmacked by the E3 pre-show and wants one himself now.
*The case of the Dreamcast excluded

too be honest most of the good franchises are available on xbox now anyhow, plus with the ps3 being harder to develop for.
I think he has a point. I really like the Xbox, and its got a great games selection, but there aren't enough wacky and original games for my liking on it. The Playstations tend to have both strange and unique games for them (Ico, Katamari),
and the more "mainstream" popular games (GTA, Gran Turismo).
