Wildstar New MMO (NCSoft and Carbine Studios)

lol why does the combat have stupid voices like you would expect from quake 3 ? and the rest sounds like it belongs to some corny evil dead 3 game or something

The first few minutes of MMO gameplay are never exciting, MMOs (in my opinion) stand or fall on the depth and quality of their group content, and that video tells us nothing about that.

Couldnt give two figs about group play personally, for me its the mid-level PvP. What makes a good MMO is being able to cater to as wide an audience as possible in a meaningful manner. I mostly solo, jump into a PUG for some content, then spend most of the time PvP. A good clan is essential though.

Deliberately staying away from the hype on this one, want to pick it up fresh and see for myself.

Yeah I try not to look too much into games now before release.
did that on Tera, Played a fwe Beta's, played the korean one for a while.
Pretty much burned out before the game even got to the UK lol :(

That and the others I was hyping up in my mind all ended up with dissapointment lol

I'll probs preorder when theres some bonuses or something

You see I'll just never understand people like you, you can get infinitely better and more immersive Solo play in a game like Skyrim or Witcher 2, infinitely better small scale PvP in Dota, Counter Strike e.t.c. and MMO small scale PvP is usually exceptionally weak. I fail to get my head around how you find enjoyment in their mediocre gameplay just because they offer the two together.

MMOs are meant to be multiplayer games where you interact and cooperate with your fellow players. :)

PVP in WoW is pretty good, in terms of arena and BGs.

I remember being pretty taken by Warsong Gulch back in 2005 but now I compare them to Dota and they just don't operate on the same level in really any regard.

The only PvP I've ever found really engaging is open world small group and solo PvP, but there's so very little of that around these days tragically.

haha good grief that sounds like torture! I could think of nothing likely to make me switch off quicker than trying to collect 40 wood to make the rear wall of the hall. Maybe you're the strange one! ;) Thats not to say a clan isnt fun, as background noise.

I dont think you can compare MMOs to SP games, especially in terms of PvP. Witcher 2 and Skyrim bored me silly, something about the predictablity of it all, but I loved Tarren Mill before BGs and getting hopped and seeking revenge for a couple of hours took the bore out of levelling. Mind you it wasnt for everyone, thats why carebear servers exist. As for CSS, yeah, enjoy it, and DoD and coop L4D2, RO etc. but theyre not MMOs.

The secret is to talk to as many types of player as possible - I have no idea where wildstar is going having avoided all the hype but im hoping for a deep open-world pvp option.

Que? Where did I suggest I liked that in the slightest? I said I enjoyed engaging and challenging group content?

Well no, those are all first person shooters, my point is that if you are the MMO type who spends 99% of his time in game on his own, then why would you play an MMO when a single player RPG offers you so much more?

Additionally I asked why the current breed of MMO PvPer who never leaves these disgusting battlegrounds which are a plague on the genre doesn't simply go and play Dota or another MOBA, where near enough every game in the genre offers better arena style combat than any MMO.

Well I'll ruin it for you now then, zero (yes, that's ZERO) world PvP at launch, just battlegrounds. (yawn)

Doesn't it have PVP servers where all contested zones are effectively open world PVP?

Erm no as far as I'm led to believe it will still only be faction v faction, which is not proper open world PvP

But just turning PvP on doesn't make for an exciting PvP set up, it takes things like things to fight over and reasons to fight over them.
Agree, you need a reason to be there, which will create its own mass battles, bit like Ilum in sw.tor till they nerfed it.

If I kill you when I'm out hunting/collecting then you may not pickup the materials/items I need, you might not also kill mobs I need for a quest.

Thats reason enough for me for open world PvP

Then again I might just be in the mood to go out and attack random people?

Tarren Mill in Vanilla wow didn't need a reason in 2005 :p or that zone with the entrance to MC (Blasted lands? Feh it's been so long), you could say Azuregos and the other world boss was a reason to fight over.
All we knew was, the mill was ours and the Alliance scum at the docks had to be killed along with their guards and flight path! :D
Then they introduced BGs and it all died :(

Before then in anarchy online people fought in locations the players made "the places to find pvp", it wasn't pre-made or limited, anyone or everyone could turn up. Then they introduced notum wars and world pvp took a dive for towers. (Yeah it's in the open but...not quite the same).

Personally, pvp has been ruined in games when it's forced, closed off, for a reason like rewards. Usually world pvp takes a back seat and offers nothing for your time and trouble. Archeage seems to acknowledge that but I'm not so sure about the game, it looks awesome but it's also an eastern game. :bluegh:.

Tarren Mill was great, sometimes you could wander through unmolested, sometimes it would be all out faction warfare. There was no specific reason for it, you couldnt capture points but the fun of it was the battle.

Personally I dont mind BGs for their convenience and im not really a sociable player either so matching up with a bunch of unknowns was fine with me. But yeah, it killed the open world stuff.

That actually looks really good, like WoW's cartoonish graphics as opposed to the crappy Rift/GW2 style "supposed to look more real but ends up looking worse" style.
