Wilko goes into Administration

They did themself no favours with that awful self service till system they set up, they had 2-3 of them stood about shepherding you to self service, they may as well have been sat on a till...

Let's face it, the self serve was just a till turned round to face the customer and had the cash drawer disabled.

My local one has been rubbish for a while now. Either empty shelves or loads of overpriced items.

I think the last thing I bought from there was some Xmas decs that were in a post-xmas sale.

It won't be missed.

Been to one about twice when I needed some household items on the day and could not wait for delivery.

Plenty of other places as mentioned to get the same stuff.

There's a Wilko not far from here.

A couple of customers have suggested that the Wilko staff should work for us.

Not as easy as that. Besides, the staff may not want to work in retail. Have some of their staff who shop at my place of work. Two should be retiring in Jan 2024.

Plus need to learn the systems we use.

Friend's son was made redundant at Waitrose (it closed and became a Lidl 15 months later) and works for Sainsburys and use completely different systems.

Shame it's closing but I always saw it as an place where Gen X and Boomers work before they get their pension. Sort of made the shop abit soulless to walk into.

Did anyone manage to snag some good deals from their local wilkos?

Sad to see them going and totally feel for the staff,My local is pretty much empty now.

None of the Wilkos in Leicestershire are on the list of 52 stores closing next week.

Not been in any Wilkos since they have been in admin. Friends and family have been in various Wilkos and with bare shelves - piles of old Halloween and Xmas crap plus other crap.

I know when Woolies went into admin, the fittings were sold to the public to get some extra money for the administrators. My mum’s cousin bought a load of empty DVD cases (they were the dummy cases which you took to the desk to get the sealed disc) and the shelving which stored the DVDs etc. Shelving is in the garage. He paid £15.

Wonder if Wilko will do the same

Is there a list of stores that B&M are considering to buy?

Doubt B&M will buy the Wilkos that are a few minutes walk from each other. Leicester city Wilko won’t be one as there’s one in Haymarket shopping centre opposite and another B&M 15 mins walk away at St George’s retail park.

If B&M have stores next to Wilko, chances they buy them and knock the units together.

Seen B&M and Home Bargains next to each other

Not related to Wilko but from my earlier post:

where my dad works (fortunately he is mostly retired now though still does consultancy work for them) is hovering on the brink with administrators called in, various attempts at refinancing haven't gone well.

Where he worked (Pittards) is now fully in administration with most people losing their jobs.

I can see a lot more places going this way in the next little while.

Went to the Beaumont Ley's one early doors today, 75% empty now, and more staff than customers, i know a guy who works there and he's not really bothered, though sadly i bet plenty are.

It'll be sad if Wilko go, but I only go to mine maybe a handful of times a year.

This is just like Woolworths all over again. :(

I bought stuff from there occasionally, but more because I liked having the option to browse and wanted to help keep it going.

In reality the vast majority of what I bought could easily be purchased from a supermarket for a similar price. I had been wondering for a while how they were hanging on.

Of course not.

Wilko don't sell DVDs.

I made the mistake of taking my dad in with me.

We walked out £130 lighter in the wallet, but with various tools and bits, including a 3 way ladder that was ~20 quid cheaper than I could find it online, some extendable garden loppers, and various other bits including refills the parker pens my dad likes (worked out the same price for 3 as I normally pay for 2 online).
