Will anything ever surpass Baldur's Gate?

Whats the difference between real time with pause

and turn based ? :)

as i remember BG had a ton of options (pause after x action) to effectively make it a turn based game....

real time would be both sides attacking with a recharge/limit to attacks. (regardless of pausing the game)

where as turn based is just that, you take turns no matter how long you stand there like a lemon.

at least that's how i see it, just think final fantasy I'm pretty sure they have used every real time and turn based system ever imaginable :p

So real time with pause is

both sides attaching with a limit to attacks..... what do you mean "limit to attacks"?

you attack, and then have to wait until you're able to attack again with the potential to be attacked by the enemy, regardless if your ready of not!

In a real time with pause game you could attack countless times without being attacked yourself. You might be attacked whilst waiting to attack again, or you might not.

Anyone play FFX, iirc the system in that was terrible

thats what happens in RT with pause too no?

With RT with pause both your and yours oppentents rounds happen together.

Where as in turn based you have a round then your opponent have a round then its your next turn.

As you used baldurs gate as an example it has realtime combat based on rounds of about 3-4 seconds(Thanks to how they implamented the D & D ruleset).

Turn-based. Note the clear sequence in which characters are acting. In this case there's also an end turn button for the player character.

Real time with pause. All the participants are acting as fast as their stats allow, attacks happen simultaneously.

Thats a really good explanation sr4770 :) thanks. always used to think i preferred turn based (e.g. realms of arkania, curse of azure bonds)

Now thinking perhaps realtime with pause is better, more realistic battle. still using stats to determine who reacts quicker etc though.

BLASPHEMY!!!!!!!!!! FFX is awesome, and the turn based combat was used in a good way for that game (including the Blitz ball mini-game, which to be honest i have as much hours put into that as a normal FF play though over 72 hours of Blitz :D)

They are all still turn based, it just happens in real time.

wrong, TURN BASED... it's in the name, meaning you take turns. lol

real time is real time. for an example go watch some final fantasy X combat videos and then watch final fantasy XIII combat videos, or refer to that link posted before - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Time-keeping_systems_in_games

i like both systems, but really it all depends on the game :p

AD&D still has a concept of turns, just not the same meaning as in "turn based", "taking turns" etc.

A turn is just a set length of time that passes.

true, but when playing a game you're either playing it or you're not. (not just BG, i mean all games that's maybe where the confusion is)

if you left a real time game alone while you went to get a drink, you will die.

where as a proper turn based game, you could go on 58 holidays and come back to them all still sitting there like lovely lemons :D
