will blue ray ever become mainstream?

Whatever your opinions on broadcast HD, it shows that an HD source exists, so why not make the Blu-rays available? The series listed generally do have Blu-rays available but they are US or European imports.

its might not be full HD, it could be only 720p..........this worries me over getting a 75'' screen, because SD already looks pretty bad on a 55''.....but the SD content i've seen on a 65'' is much worst !!!

4K Blu-Ray will look excellent, but you'll not have enough films to watch.... leaving you with a 4K tv that cant view any material without looking slightly blurry at best, or totally horrid at worst, like this text in red

Conclusion, you can not upscale 1080p without it showing, the best tv to get is a really good 65'' 1080p or a 75''....but i'm not really sure yet

4k? a total waste of time, because most of the films on release wont be worth watching anyway.

I don't mind watching a bit of Sky or Netflix, but if I'm having friends over for a movie or want to feel good about/showcase the tech... it's Bluray every time.

what about when you're on your own watching normal tv content, because you cant watch 4k movies all the time..........it's definitely worth thinking about

you do ?

what flavour of hd you talking about as i have a major grip with sky and the bbc and their ideas of what hd is. god help us with whatever they turn out as 4k in a year or two.

It's on sky which I know is capped at 1080i, however I think freesat users can get BBC hd in 1080p.

must have one very fancy sat box as sky's boxes dont support 1080P as far as i know. as for the bbc gotta love their streaming iplayer. 720p and isnt happy streaming live events. as i said above god help us when they try and broadcast 4k in any form, as they havent cracked 1080P yet.

4K tv will be much worst, because it'll upscale the same rubbish we get right now all the way up to 4K, this will be for years yet.....easily the next 10 years.

but, they are improving upscaling on a 4K tv

1080i/50 and 1080p/25 are essentially two sides of the same coin. If the image started out as progressive, then it's perfectly possible to transmit it in interlaced format and then reconstruct it at the TV display.

Of course though, things become a little trickier when converting from 1080p/24 to 1080i/50, and significantly more difficult when dealing with an image originated in 1080i/50 which then has to be deinterlaced at the display panel.

As far as 1080p in broadcast TV goes, AFAIK it's only available to Freevew HD TVs. There may be Freesat boxes that can output at 1080p, but that's more likely to be from deinterlacing the 1080i broadcast image to make is progressive.

The Beeb have been using a mixed format standard that uses 1080i in static shots and 1080p where there's movement.

I knew it was one of them that could do 1080p, just not sky. TBH i just would be happy if the +1 channels were in HD not some ridiculously low bitrate.

What's the most likely for existing movies that are mastered at 2K but filmed at 4K?

1) Not bother with UHD Blu-Ray releases and kill off the disc format.

2) Release it as a hybrid format, using 4K wherever possible and upscaling 2K CGI scenes.

3) Release at higher bitrate with 10-bit colour upscaled 2K.

4) Spend $10m's and 6months re-rendering CGI for 4K master.

Do all programs have that issue?
My Sammy TV upstairs is terrible for it. Dark is to dark regardless off TV settings, and dark scenes might as well just turn TV off.

Will never buy another Sammy TV again.
As well as not displaying dark scenes, the smart TV bit is utter crap, it keeps forgetting WiFi password randomly.
Then Sammy TV downstairs doesn't do black or even drake grey, ghosting and generally appalling display. Ok one downstairs is old now, but put me of Samsung for life between the two. Cannot wait to upgrade either.

Stupidly cheap hanspree was better than either till it died.

Pretty sure it's all fine. Just any dark scene has no detail.

Sounds like your crushing the blacks. Your settings must be wrong somewhere.

Google crushed blacks

You also either don't have correct settings or you didn't buy a decent TV.

Check hdtvtest or avforums reviews before buying any TV.

Samsung make some really good sets sounds like you like budget models which tend to be crap.

Post the model number of both your Samsungs to verify.

Well it sounds exactly like crushed blacks. Either that or their compression methods extract detail from dark scenes.

Could possibly be a hdmi handshake issue or your TV is set to limited and the box is outputting full range.

My TV can apparently detect what the input is and adjust on the fly but it sometimes doesn't work. Recently bought a decent hdmi cable and now it works all the time.

I'll have a proper look at the settings tonight.

You'll need a black pluge pattern from AVSHD709. Plus if you have Casino Royale Blu-Ray, you'll want to check to see if you can see the fine dark details in the black windows for the building at the Prague. Only a minute in or so.
