Will Lapping a CPU affect resale value?

I've been offered a Core i7 processor which has been lapped and I was just wondering if the fact that it's lapped would have a negative effect on the resale value, should I choose to sell it at a later date.

Generally yes. With no warranty this will limit your resale market.

personally i would say it wpuld up the value sightly for me as its a long boring process(i've done 4 off my own cpus ) and if its showen working then there is nothing much to worry about as most people dont use warremtys on cpus have you ever returned a cpu to intel due to a fault ?

It's a gamble, if it's an awesome clocker (improved by the fact it's been lapped) then it will still hold good resale value. With the resale of OEM chips over 1 year old the warranty stops being an issue anyhow.

If it's out of warranty it shouldn't, but it depends who you want to sell it to. I can't see any overclockers being bothered by it, I've bought a lapped cpu 2nd hand and didn't give it a second thought.

Its a retail CPU so still would've had a couple of years warranty left but obviously won't have now. It's been previously clocked to 4.8GHz phase cooled

Takes 5 minutes!

(I have access to a lapping machine :p)

Probably yes, if someone laps a CPU they know their way around tech so its likely they've overclocked it, possibly abused it and significantly lowered its lifespan, then again it may be perfectly fine.

For you it might be OK but for a putter on the bay its damaged goods and abused.

warranty's really shouldn't be an issue with cpus unless the chip is DOA brand new

cpu's especially Intel ones wont just suddenly die if its currently working

in fact cpu's are pretty damn resilient

ive purposely tried to kill an old socket 775 cpu i couldn't be bothered to sell and the damn thing just wouldn't die

well i've lapped both my 920 D0's and it makes a huge diffrence for ever day running when under water and good TIM the main risk to lappinging is the lapping once it goes back in and working it will be fine for many years to come always a good idead to ask for a picture to see how well its been lapped as for soem people its a quick 15 min job with soem 400 grit sand paper on the other hand if your a OCD geek my self i go through 600-800-100-1200-1600-1800-2000-2500 grits for an hour and a half and boy does it show cant have a gentlemans handshake for days ! lol and what a finish

burt like i was saying its only a good idea under extreme conditions saty water or high end air and requires good tim to make the most
