lolwut? A slap can break you ear drum, and since when a slap is like touching someone. And who told you you can touch whoever you like because YOU believe you have been offended?
It depends what you are used to I guess. I got a slap as a kid to put me in my place many times. It didn't do me any harm
it's still a criminal offence and receiving an oscar can be seen as rewarding that behaviour
My mum used to whack me with a slipper when I was really bad like getting arrested, it never did me any harm, made me not want to get arrested again.
but the world has changed and people shouldn't be slapping others on live TV.
people will no doubt be imitating it thinking it's funny, these people are meant to be role models

Loads of kids were watching this today. What kind of message does the highest awarding body in the media industry send if they don’t take action.
yea he's supposed to be a role model, people get cancelled for words, but violence is okay? lol
It's called human nature I guess. It happens and always will do, some people are more prone to physical violence and some are not. Some put up with it, some don't. the naivety shown here is unbelievable sometimes. Some people cannot control themselves in that situation and I've seen it many many times. I just saw it on the Oscars, it makes no difference.

Poilanski won an oscar after being convicted or raping a 13 year old. He has several accusations against him.
He's still making films and winning oscars...
how does that make what will smith did okay? and when was the last time polanski won an oscar? google suggests 2 decades, he should have been stripped of them all

My point is, is that Hollywood is full of scumbags and dirt. What Smith has done is nothing compared to the a lot of others who are still allowed to operate in this industry

Some of them are kids! What does a free pass mean!? Basically the world is a pretty messed up and violent place, you better get used to it because when push comes to shove I know which side of the fence I'd rather be on.
Plus look at his eyes when the joke is being made. Do you think he was really enjoying it? The bloke crossed a line and maybe people crossing the line in that way have been protected for far too long.

Violence should only be the answer if there's no other option and then in that case yea it's better to get the first swing in.

People on YouTube analysing the slap and claiming it didn't hit, or only partially hit. Something else to debate about for another decade plus.
It does look like he half pulled out or Chris Rock partially dodges the brunt of it.
Either way, ridiculous on both parties.
Problem was that Will laughed. If they both gave a frosty reception then Chris Rock looks like the bad guy.
The side of the fence that uses violence with no notion of it's consequences is not a side I'd pick as it would very likely turn on it's own pretty quickly (literally any autocracy or revolution ever), violence has to be used intelligently (if at all with the likelihood that there are far more rewarding avenues to pursue) or it's just senseless.
All he's really achieved here is to highlight his partner's condition as well as his weak slapping skill. In the context of his barely functional marriage it looks even more ridiculous.

I always scale how good an actor is on how good they play a villain as well as protagonist. Most of them would have acted in play to film adaptations and slotted into their characters very convincingly. Will Smith makes perfectly serviceable movies in that they are entertaining and very watchable, but he wouldn't be in my top 10 of actors, maybe not even 20. The Oscars and these other award ceremonies really should be scrapped, they are levels of cringe, especially since we all know we now live in a world where regurgitated green screen crap sells, and money is ultimately what it's all about, not quality.
Having said that I did watch Dune, and for what it was I must say I did enjoy it, but it wasn't down to acting ability more down to how well it was directed as compared to David Lynch's version which I didn't get along with.
