Will the Mac end up becoming un-cool?

Rarely have a read a post that contains so much hotch potch. All those functions should be integrated into one product. If you think W7 is ugly then I wouldn't like to see your choice of women.

So me explaining to you that Mail can do everything you complained it can't do is hotch potch?

And you're reduced, essentially, to a complaint that iCal is its own app.

Good work.

Heh without quoting anyone or getting into an argument I have a point to make:

I, over the years, have spent 10-100% more on my Apple equipment than the equivalent Windows/non-iPhone device.

Now, I do not choose my Apple things for it being popular, cool or any stupid reasons like that, I choose it for stability, build quality, ease of use and 'polish'.

Some people can't grasp the fact people have different requirements in their purchasing decisions...

You've not even tried to answer OPs

I am that person??????? So much for you taking the time to read and absorb and I say again just in case you didn't get it the first time Windows is not a hardware product unlike the Mac. :o

Windows 7 is essentially Vista with the latest service packs and a UI change. Windows 7 is still the same Windows we've been using for over a decade on the backend

Yet another poorly informed Windows observer. I really don't know where you get this stuff from, truly dreadful.

It is

It can do that

It can also do that

It's a separate app but Mail and iCal are VERY tightly built together. Have you noticed how Mail can spot dates in emails and add them to your iCal? Have you seen how it can see what's a telephone number and you can make an Address book contact straight from Mail with their telephone, email, and so on, even their street address if it's in the email?

It has a to-do list.

You can add as many colours in as you want. You can't make it as ugly as Windows though. I'm sorry.

Your problem with Mail is that you don't know how to work it and you don't want to find out.

Hmm! perhaps you'll enlighten me how to configure these options then?

Faustus, why are you forcing a mac vs pc debate on the thread?

If you want help learning to use mail and ical Clicky.

I realise that my original post didn't answer the OP itself, it more focused on why I own a Mac and the fact that people did purchase them before they were cool so will continue to do so after.

So will they end up becoming uncool to the majority?

To start lets look at the reasons they are so popular at the moment.

Firstly generally in the last few years it is no longer geeky to own an external hard drive, have a phone that can tell you where you are and a laptop that allows you to have video conversations with people on the other side of the world. Just a few years ago these things were considered geeky, but now everyone has a use for them in the real world. Everyday people but external hard drives to put their music and videos on, these same people like using sat nav from their phone and they also love to skype with people.

So why has Apple in particular been picked up by teen girls (as in the op) and the masses as a cool brand?

I personally think there are two reasons;

Firstly design, Apple has has created products that are perceived by the majority as aesthetically pleasing and easy to use. This encompasses the hardware and software that they produce. Yes I am talking about the "OOO look its shiney" effect and its derivatives. Obviously the devices must be easy to use as well or they would never have taken off.

Secondly marketing, Apple has made the conscious decision to attempt to be the "cool" brand. Look at their branding and adverts, they are minimalistic and different from the rest. They don't harp on about specifications of products but have fun and interesting tv ads, or ones that show product features. Hell even the company director when making presentations about new products to the world wear's jeans and a plain black tshirt (polo neck :/) This isn't by accident but a conscious effort to implant an impression of the company to its potential customers.

So when will this effect die out?

I think when either possibly the general public decide that they no longer need gadgets and technological advancements in their life (not going to happen).

Or when Apple changes as a company, either no longer designing aesthetically pleasing, easy to use products. Or possibly when they want to change their own image and try and appeal to a different market.

Of course they could also be dragged down by the press after a launch of an extremely unsuccessful product that tarnishes their company image but I think this is unlikely. Every time they release something new their is some kind of uproar from different user groups and/or the media, but I don't see them doing irreparable damage to Apples image.

So to conclude, as long as people still want new gadgets and computers and apple still want to be the "cool" brand then I can't see Mac's or any of their other devices becoming uncool fast.

My mistake, got mixed up with another thread.

Windows won't be cool because it's ugly. Apple will be uncool if they make ugly machines.

I never implied Windows was hardware... Glass houses mate.

I don't consider my iMac to be cool or otherwise. To me it's a computer albeit a very nice one aesthetically. However, it's not without it's faults. I think its achilles heal is the OS, it hasn't kept up with the competition. I really couldn't do with having to use it all the time I just couldn't. I know I'm not as familiar with OS X as I am with Windows but I can't think of anything it does that is better - different yes but not better. Therefore for me at least it gets scored down on that one but very important point.

Then you're in a minority, whether you accept it or not.

OK, fair enough.

Few things are.

It gets scored down because it isn't better? You don't appear to have come up with anything that it does worse, so I'm still not inclined to take you seriously.

Do you work for Microsoft, by the way?

Leaving the the OS arguement aside and looking at hardware, I could build a PC with components from a £1600 mac for about £700. That to ME* is un-cool

*Please don't get all mac fanboyish and jump me and steal my wallet, this is MY opinion, and for MY uses (I.e I don't really need any 'expertise' a mac might offer), they just seem a rip off.

I have no problem with people who utilise a mac and thus need one, but some people just go on and on all day long about how they are awesome yet don't even understand much about them and simply say it because they 'look nice'.

What comparison though? Some macs use laptop parts, which are more expensive, iMacs have great monitors, not ****ty tn-film cheap jobbies.

There's all sorts of factors.

On a slightly different note I’m seeking help (not for me) for my neighbour. This is the one I mentioned earlier who I advised not to buy the Mac Mini as it is clearly overpriced.

Well he took my advice (not) and has bought a Mac Mini, all £649 worth, ouch! The problem he is having is with his Windows keyboard, the @ key is doing quotations and the quotations key i.e. the 2 key is doing the @ sign. The keyboard is set to European so is there a way to get the keys to act normally?

I have to say that apart from the price the performance is really impressive. I know it’s brand new, however, he has put 150 gigs of his stuff on the drive, data, music, pics and video and yet it is very very quick and responsive, surprising for a 5400 rpm HD. I had a bit of a play and at one point had thirteen windows open and yet it showed no signs of falling over no matter what I did with it. For everyday computing apart from the price I don’t think you can go wrong with this cute little machine. It certainly appears to have made on switcher very happy at least.

Even European Mac keyboards have the @ and the " swapped round

He will just have to learn to accept it or buy a mac keyboard.

One of the downsides of Mac Ownership. its there way or the highway.

No he won't, he can use a different keymap.

faustus - I can send you a keymap and instructions on where to put it, or you can google for it.
