will WOW ever get a ....

Should look at Ultima Online - that sod's been using the same 2D core since it's 1997 release, and EA are still making money from it! There is a '3D' client, but its isometric 3D and extremely pap.

Its beyond pap.

Not as bad as the ML client though.. That was just pure lol.

Hard Drive.

To the OP, as has been said, WoW doesnt need an upgrade because it fits the game style, is easy to run and even when theres 30 people chucking stuff around its still achieving passable framerates on low end comps. but most of all, ***

HD doesnt mean hard-drive, everybody knows hard drives are really called Hard Disk Drives!

Why would they bother updating the graphics, it wont make them money?

You can use console commands to go past ultra settings but they really push the cpu in crowded places lol. The game doesnt have proper multicore support which is annoying as I use an i7

They'll keep upgrading the engine really slowly so as to avoid losing customers running the game on their microwave oven.

I'll wager that something like World Of Starcraft (is that happening or am I making it up?) will look much more up to date.

As has been stated by many of the other posters, it's not worth blizzards effort really.

And i think it's fine as it enables me to play on my laptop while travelling and still manage to 20-25fps on average and this is on a 2 year old lappy with with a gma gfx chip.

Whilst the game continues to run flawlessly on basically every machine in existence (with a few exceptions for some graphics drivers) i can't imagine why they would change it.

They gave the game a cartoony feel which allows it to really profit from its low graphical requirements yet still add in extras that give it a nice polished touch. It's not the prettiest game out there and doesnt even try to hide it's lack of advanced engine (hexagonal wheels!) but it just works, and it works for everyone. £200 machine or £2000 machine.

Edit:
And like someone else said, whilst it's running fine on my netbook and still playable in raids, i hope it stays that way! I suspect they will slowly add in graphical upgrades over time anyway, much lik ethe dynamic shadows that were only added Q4 last year.

In any case, the game has far more pressing longevity issues than graphics.

My gold is on Lost Vikings Online ^^

Rumours abound.. but yeah.. this would indeed be awesome.

WoW does what it says on the tin, like others have said, you will gets small patches and improvements over time. They would not overhaul the whole lot in one go, I think mainly because they like to keep it relatively easy for computers to run so those gold farmers can run 5+ bots on a single machine ;)

If they updated the gfx by increasing the poly count, adding higher res textures and adding all sort of post process effects etc how would the game retain its distinctive look and character? It just wouldn't feel right. I reckon it looks great the way it is.

Rumoured for cata is:

New water system
New player models
New particle system
Optimised shadow system
Improved physics system

I wouldnt expect a gigantic overhaul of their cash cow though.....you know the saying........if it works dont fix it.
