will WOW ever get a ....

The new Ultra setting in the options from the last major content patch seemed to make everything a lot sharper and more detailed, which was a welcome change.

As Voltage says, there are a few more tweaks coming to help increase the looks.

If you compare Vanilla WoW to Cataclysm WoW, you will notice a difference in quality.

Obviously, the additions don't count as what you class as an overhaul, however, at least they added some improvements over time!

I think the slightly cartoony graphics give WoW the edge over some of its competitors.

Whilst I would have liked to have seen sharper and more updated models throughout the game (something I suspect they will implement in Cata) the cartoony feel is good in that something "wrong" graphically never seems too horrendous.

Whereas you look at some of the newer releases like WAR and Aion and with them trying so damn hard to make the game look realistic that every glitch that they make is pointed out by everyone and then lamented on the fact that the graphics are not good enough. If you try and make a game look extremley realistic and point out to potential players how important this is to your game people will delight in shooting the hell out of this, thats just the way most gamers are.

Whilst an update in terms of new models and the general polished appearance of the game would be good for WoW I think they are to the smart money by sticking with the cartoony feel of things (something I personally do not see as bad graphics, I like the theme they have ran with)

Accessability is now a biword for World of Warcraft. You can see this easily by looking at the lengths they have gone to make raiding accessable to as many people as possible. In the old days only the moderately dedicated guilds could do MC, these days anyman and his dog can pug instances. The high number of subscription they continue to keep shows that they are doing a good job of catering for a large amount of people.

If they were to dramatically increase graphics quality they would alienate a lot of players playing on old computers so they will not do this. They will continue to make small improvements. For example they have confirmed that they will be improving the way water looks and acts in Cataclysm. But they would be daft (financially) to greatly increase the minimum requirements.

And yeah to my knowledge MMORPGs are generally more CPU intensive than other games as you can get an awful lot happening at the same time. Infact I was having horrible issues on some Ulduar 25man hardmodes with my old P4 x1800xt pc. It was this that made me give up and splash out here on building a new pc.

Just noted Dampcats mention of longetivity. Personally (as my pc used to suck) I used to play far far too much warcraft. Got addicted for a while to achievement points and got over 9000 which indicates a massive use (or waste!) of time. But for me now that I have a good PC and i can play all the new pretty games that come along I only tend to log on for our progressive raids. Thats all i like anymore in the game, beating the new bosses can't wait til we are playing ICC hardmodes!!

There is not much else I bother with in the game. Maybe i burnt out when i went through my achievement farming phase. I am however looking very forward to the new Archaeology part of the game in Cataclysm. I think that is some i would really enjoy outside of progress raids.

I think though wow will be fine for many many years to come. Sure players will get bored and leave but more will pick it up keeping it alive.

Just go and sit in the corner.

And why is that Clum?

in HD what 1920*1080?

Are you trying to be smart by trying to imply that the resolution you said means HD? If so read my post after, sorry I didn't write some thing so technically sound, I remember seeing the pictures. I remember it saying HD revamp of WoW so that is what stuck in my head. I didn't think at the time "why golly gosh isn't that actually incorrect unless they mean the resolution of pictures is that of a HD standard"

Jeez.

If I read to much in to what you said ignore the above.

when i played WoW at release and 10 months after the one thing i hated were the terrible clipping issues you get with certain armours and weapons

is that still in the game?

probably is

WoW looks and functions fine as it is really.

It doesn't look nasty and it doesn't look cutting edge. The style of the graphics (cartoony-esque) means it can last longer without looking extremely dated.

Functions fine as it is for me. I like being able to go play (tho not on highest settings) on my laptop and then all max settings on my computer.

That said I do like how say, Dragon's Age looks generally, but not when zoomed in when talking to someone. I don't like when they add stuff to make it seem more realistic when it's definitely going to look abit cartoon-y anyway zoomed in.
Wouldn't mind WoW looking something like that. I'm just picky, meh.

And yea, they have improved some parts of the games. Just compare a BE to another race face/hair wise and you can easily see :p Same goes for newer zones.

I remember seeing a screen shot (well two) of wow in HD, looked really really nice. May have been photo shopped who knows.

Victim of marketing spin IMO. Next you'll boast that your dual-core machine allows you to 'do two things at once'.

Ha, I'm just messing.

I think the important point is that WoW's graphics are cartoony to the point where upgrades are wholly unnecessary. I believe that this was a conscious decision by a very shrewd organisation.

World of Warcraft won't but they'll release WoW2 with graphical enhancements probably.

tbh wow will never get an upgrade...apart from a new expansion.

i think games have got too the point where even if theyre 10 year old its still looks appealing too the eye. yes wow is getting old but its still very pritty with its art style.

So in conclusion if they bring out a few new graphical updates that wont rly bring in new people if its not a huge impact in the looks of the game.

Nope its not HD unless it has the "HD ready" sticker on it! as my m8 insisted was right! LOL

All these people talking about 'HD WoW' are talking about HDR (High Dynamic Range) and it is completely exclusive from High Def video.

There are tweaks you can do in your config files for nice looking HDR.

I cannot see it myself, It's coded in such away that most lower spec machine can play it. Imagine the revenue that would be lost if subscribers could not play the game.

TC.
