Willy waving thread: show us your laptops!

Only laptop i have at the moment is an oldish Macbook
C2D 2.16Ghz
2Gb DDR2 533 ram
13" Screen
running 10.6.2? whatever the latest update is most likely lol (my sister is using it for college work.....) :(

Screen: 15.6" Glossy (1366x768)

I'm pretty happy with this as I got it for a steal ($600AU). The screen is a bit disappointing but for a basic workhorse laptop with some light gaming thrown it it is ideal.

This 15.6" screens with 1366x768 rubbish has to stop imo. It's ridiculous that you have to buy a high end laptop to get above this resolution, and even then it is often optional!

You're not wrong. And why the hell does every low to mid range laptop now come with a glossy screen??? I think it's just because they look all shiney shiney in the stores. I hate gloss screens but trying to find a decently priced laptop without one these days is virtually impossible,

Screens are by far my biggest issue with laptops, which is why I've just bought something cheapish (£335) for now that still fits most of my criteria (fairly light, slim, decent battery, 13.3" etc.).

Should do until 1080p screens become the norm.

i3 2330m, 4gb DDR3, 500GB 7200rpm HDD etc, pretty standard really but in a much more portable size than the normal 15.6" behemoths with 2.5h battery lifes.

Keyboard and trackpad are both pretty nice, although the trackpad is a little on the small side. Screen is alright, slightly better than average viewing angles but stuck with the low res.

Aspire TimelineX 3830t, it's the latest model with Sandy Bridge although I think there are some older ones running Arrandale i3/5s and C2Ds.

Yeah my issue are with screens aswell, though resolution if less of a concern, I wish their were more laptops that used IPS/PVA screens.

My laptop is almost 4 years old now, will probably upgrade it this year to a thinkpad x-series when the new models come out.

XPS M1330 Black
T9300 (2.5 C2D)
4GB RAM
320GB HD
Nvidia 8400GS
13.3 W-LED Screen
Black Keyboard (from a vostro something or other i fitted when i first bought the laptop)
Win7 64-bit

my work laptop is a Fujitsu S7110, which is probably just as old as my m1330.

My quite underused backlit dell vostro 3550 since bought almost new last september. Love it. Rather wasted with me tbh though, since I've mostly just used it for HDMI'ing to my 32" TV for watching movies, and youtube. It has a very capable AMD Radeon HD 6630M and I've installed some games, but I've done no gaming on it yet. In fact, if you look closely, I only just realised I haven't even removed the plastic protection over the keys, you can see the lifting tabs.

Merlin5 thats a very very nice looking laptop - what sort of graphics chip do those Vostro's come with?

Thanks. :) It comes with a dual switchable graphics solution, so, AMD Radeon HD 6630M is the dedicated mid range card, capable of playing most games,
review (http://www.notebookcheck.net/AMD-Radeon-HD-6630M.43963.0.html) and benchmark (position 128 in benchmark rating http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Graphics-Cards-Benchmark-List.844.0.html) and also the built in Intel HD3000. There was a problem with the dedicated being recognised but fortunately Dell got nagged and they created a bios fix which makes it work perfectly. Great value for money laptop imo. Backlit, dual graphics, fast processor, and lots of bells and whistles.

Problem is, not all of them have the 6630M. A lot I've seen recently only come with the HD3000 and are like £600+. I got lucky and paid £415. However, I've just spotted one on ebay if you're interested.

Dell Vostro 3550 £499 + £15 shipping, Aberdeen silver lid, 15.6" i5-2430M 500GB 4GB ATi 1GB HD6630M 3Yr Warranty included in price. Looks like it has one tiny indent on the lid.

Here's a game screenshot from mine, you can see the backlit keys better, and there's two levels of lighting for it.

Just a general question - But do people tend to leave batterys in whilst gaming on a laptop?

I've heard that it creates extra heat, but I opted for a 9-Cell Battery on the Dell XPS as it slightly raises the laptop at the back. Thoughts?

Whenever I'm on the laptop for a long time or doing something such as gaming, I'll take the battery out. This simply ensures I won't ruin the battery, because before I started doing this my maximum charge percentage fell to 88% from December to April due to gaming (I think).

Anyway, here's my laptop:

XPS L702X

i7-2670QM
3GB GT 555M
Soon to be 16GM RAM (yes, it's overkill, but it's cheap)
Bigger battery (bit of a pain really)
Buying a backlit keyboard soon as well

Unfortunately I put a dent in the lid. :(
