** WIN an MSI N560GTX-Ti Twin Frozr II/OC Graphics card! **

if checking ip address, does not work. i think it would be fairer to only allow people who had joined before the start of the competition. because as i havent been here that long i wouldnt like to be excluded from entering because of a low post count.

your only 4 posts and a few days away from getting free shipping ;)

but i know exactly what you mean, its completely unfair on the legitimate newer users. however, whats to stop people from making some new accounts specifically for competitions, making a few random helpful posts and then disappearing until competitions come along, at which point they go crazy with the entries.

you'd have to be pretty determined to win whatever competition it was to do this, but i honestly wouldnt be surprised if some people in the world would do this. however, if the entry requirements were the same for free shipping then im pretty sure no one would make more than one account for it.

unless the mods can do something very clever i cant see a completely fool proof way out of this. originally i thought about checking personal details via credit card details, but its not mandatory to have them stored on your shop account (for damn good reason) so not even that would work

Yeah true enough Reaper :(

I would also be ****** if someone who has hardly any posts and has been here for ages (e.g. 60 posts and like 4 years membership) or only just joined (not duplicate accounts) won this competition.

Personally I don't think it is too late, it's not like anyone had to do anything e.g. pay a small fee in order to enter or buy something first and be entered in the competition etc. and it only took like 3-7 minutes to enter :p, they could just exclude all the entries from the people who have just joined in order to enter this for reasons that they could be duplicate accounts and/or new comers that haven't taken any part in the forum at all and most likely won't again after entering this.

EDIT:

As said, maybe the requirements that you need for free shipping?

you cant do a blanket ban for this competition on all new forum members because there was nowhere in the terms and conditions (that i know of) that said new members couldnt enter.

i'm trying my very best not to sound harsh to all the new members, but i'm just struggling to think of a decent way of stopping all duplicate accounts, while still leaving the entry requirements fair, and free shipping is the best i can come up with :(

Playing devils advocate, why would OcUK deliberately exclude new members from signing up for the competition?

Each new account is more potential shop revenue so it isn't in their best interests to block this.

Yes it would be annoying if it was won by a new member, but personally I'd be equally disappointed whoever won it. Let's hope some of the newcomers stay and contribute.

also what i was thinking, which is one of the reasons i said it really wasnt ideal to use the free shipping requirements as entry requirements.

Yeah, I know that they didn't mention anything in the first post, but I still think they could do what I suggested, there aren't any rules against that as far as I am aware and plus they are the providers of this competition so they can do what they like, could they not? :p

I also think the requirements for free shipping would be the best option as well for competitions like this.

I can just see someone winning who has joined June 2011 with 1 post and last activity was when they entered this forum in order to enter this competition

Not really, just sign up to enter this and then probably won't bother with this site again even if they do win, and they obviously know of this competition, then obviously they are aware of overclockers UK, you don't need to join the forums in order to shop on OCUK.

Be even more annoying though if what I mentioned in my previous post happened.

the problem with using the free shipping requirements for entry is that it would ruin (what i guess is the) main reason the competition has been made in the first place: to bring in new customers.

i have faith that OcUK will think of something to stop even the most determined multi entrant

Bear in mind that whilst it is nice that OcUK are running this competition, they aren't doing it for any other reason than increasing their customer base.
Anyone that feels this is unfair doesn't understand commerce.

If it is limited to free shipping enabled customers and therefore current shop customers, the competition has exactly the opposite effect of meaning someone gets a new card and therefore has no need of a new one anytime soon!

It's just business. Personally I'm happy to be in with a chance, no matter how diluted.

That and they might also just want to be giving the forum community something back as well :p, there are other forums, sites etc. which don't sell products or anything but they still have competitions just for the forum.

But this was posted on the forum and not the main shop site afaik, if they wanted it to be open to their existing shop customers then they would have posted it on the front page as well (which would be much better for them from a business point of view IMO as not all of their customers [possibly most of them as well] will check the forums at all) where the user doesn't just have to create a new forum account and trust account just to enter, just take the first post and post it somewhere in a section on OCUK main site with the email address to Scott.

And even if one of the new comers didn't win this, they are hardly going to stop using OCUK (if they do even use them for their purchases) just because they didn't win especially if OCUK have got an excellent component or something for a really good price compared to everywhere else, that new comer isn't going to go to another competitor to pay more money just because he didn't win.

EDIT:

Also this here:

MSI and OcUK are offering forum members a chance to win themselves a MSI N560GTX-Ti Twin Frozr II/OC Graphics card.

To me it sounds like MSI are wanting to advertise and OCUK are wanting to reward their loyal forum members.

As I said before if the main reason was that OCUK were wanting to increase their customer base, they would have posted this on their front page of the main shop site.
