Win8 Tablets

Rumours are acer are going to release a cheaper version of their win8 tablets in new year. Could be great if it could get down to say $250, have to wait and see, wonder if it'll be intel or arm.

I can't see them getting that low. The Windows 8 system builder's license is around $100 on it's own.

Yep shambles.
Trouble is there's no windows tablets in stores to go play with, which means lack of reporting on such devices as well.

This is the period they should be selling, yet nothing.

Not quite, there are a few. I played with the Surface in John Lewis and a couple of other windows tablets over the last couple of weeks.

The annoying thing is I really want to love it, it's a stunning design but I think MS dropped the ball a little by not completing the RT conversion. The desktop just seems disjointed from the rest of the UI and it (the OS) takes up too much room on the HDD. I love the fact you could plug anything in, however I think they should have stripped RT out and made it like WP8 rather than just converted Windows x86.

The size is just too big for me to justify at the moment too, I am very tempted to get the iPad mini at the moment as a travel item. It's much smaller/lighter than the surface but also has more screen estate than the other 7" tablets (and the 3x4 works for my intended uses - photos viewing from my DSLR and web browsing, 16x9 is rubbish for that), it's also so much nicer hardware, slimmer and not bulky like the Nexus and Fire. Shame really because I think RT would be a better OS to use for my intentions and so would Android to an extent, however at least I can have a play with all the apps on the OS.

has anyone bought anything of note yet?

Its bloody taking for ages for anything decent to come to market at a decent price.

So far on the forums I think we have:
A few Surface RTs
An Acer W510
A Samsung Ativ PC

I'll be pulling the trigger on a Surface Pro as soon as they're up for pre-order.

There will be a Surface Pro release event on jan 25th in New York. Making it very likely it will be on sale on the 26th, they did say it would be 90 days after the surface rt.

I hope the UK gets it the same time, although our Surface site has no pricing for the Pro yet.

I think the 128 GB version will sell out the quickest. Probably going to force the Touch cover with it like the 64GB RT.

I want the cyan cover, but will likely be stuck with the black.

What is the product in the windows 8 advert, the giant tablet they are showing? (well thats what it looks like)

It's just a normal all-in-one PC but with a touch screen.

Theres loads of them from Dell, HP, Asus, Sony, Lenovo, Acer and others (but the Dell is the best)...

For anyone who has a Surface RT... Has the performance improved since launch? It had some very slight lag on the Modern UI (still smoother than Android though) i don't really care about the desktop though. I was just wondering if it's been fixed with the updates released since then?

Visio has pre announced an AMD Hondo tablet for CES,
Can't wait to see how it's stacks up against clover tail. Even if its slightly worse battery life, be better if it has massively improved graphics. Especially with its decent resolution.

This 11.6-inch system deviates from the norm in other ways, too. All of the other Windows 8 hybrids and convertibles we've seen run Intel Core i-series or Atom processors. The MT11X runs a low-power AMD Z60 (which, on paper, seems very Atom-like).

The resolution is a full 1,920x,1080, which will scale fine in the Windows 8 tile UI, but using the traditional Windows desktop mode at 1080p on an 11-inch screen might get tricky, especially if you're trying to tap a button on the touchscreen.

The one model we've seen details on has 2GB of RAM and a 64GB SSD, and weighs 1.7 pounds. With a low-power AMD processor, and relatively small SSD, this will have to be priced aggressively to stand out, but Vizio has not yet announced any release date or price details.

Amd says battery life for tablets should be around 8hrs which is good enough, should be around 10mm thick, which is a little large but acceptable, but it hammers the clover trial into the floor on gfx power.

That sounds like a nice compromise.

If it matches the Atoms general Windows performance and battery life its Win, Win. Depending on price.

The more I think about Surface Pro the less I want one, but until this the alternatives were just as flawed.

I still want one, but can't justify the money.
Thinking about w700 now.

But it won't be this month, it was tablet or forking out for axe and other wood carving tools and parts for 3d printer. As I got ipad working again, the latter two won.

It's a large "tablet" not an all in one, hence you can just pick it up and move it from room to room, even an all in one, that isn't practice. All in ones generally don't have a battery and a fair few aren't touchscreen.

Would need to see a still image, but I bet it's the Sony tap 20

The W700 does not appear to be much cheaper. Its about $100 cheaper in the USA?

My educated guess on Surface Pro Prices:

64GB: £718.93591875
128GB £798.90654375

(Current Surface is 27.95 ish % extra, 20% for VAT then an extra 7.95% for something else)

The release schedule for all these things is annoying, now its a case of looking at what is next like the Vizio rather then enjoying the things we should have had in October!
