Windows 10 FAQ

Danny, i got the same hashes with that program as i did with my program, but i just noticed for some reason, the iso had a blocked box enabled because it was downloaded, so i am retesting with it unblocked now.

Sorry i dont get what you mean by a blocked box?

Which login screen? The one where you have to swipe up or the background image?

The background where you actually enter the password :)

urm just start typing them and it learns them :P

:| Im not typing it out haha. Its 500+ lines

Ok same result as before, something must have changed the hashes when it was blocked, any ideal what causes this ? do i have to disable something while downloading you think ?

Try the mega link?

Will do, these iso's arn't the N version's are they, and the block thing is a security thing you sometimes see when you right click a file and chouse properties, you then have a option to unblock, usually only on exe type files.

No they are the full versions.

I haven't heard of that block thing, must be part of your anti-virus or something. The only time something gets blocked for me is when chrome thinks its dangerous and you have to do that recover it and click the box that says "make it hurt" haha

You can change the login wallpaper by group policy. :p As long as you are on pro/enterprise editions.

Yeah the screen where you type the password.

OMG I think you are right. I was only looking at the path: Computer configuration, administration templates, control panel, personalisation.

But if I look in the path: Computer configuration, administration templates, system, login - bottom option states "always use custom logon background*

Will test and revert back

All hashes match now, must have been corrupted, thx again for this, cheers

OK so that option doesn't work. I also replaced all images in web I could find that matched login screen and it didn't change. Put it back to normal.

MrBell - what setting is it in gpedit to change the background as I cant find it?

Thanks

Don't know if you wanted to add this, as it pertains to anyone using a Samsung Spinpoint F3 drive as well as a couple of the Hitachi models. The new RST drivers that come with Windows 10 cause the heads to park and unpark constantly on these drives, leading to increased wear and an annoying sound every few seconds.

I posted this response below in another thread but thought I'd include it here as well.

I've solved the issue!

It's to do with the new Intel RST drivers that we're forced to use on Windows 10 and would've occurred had you updated to the latest RST on 7/8/8.1 too.

Download HDD Guardian to find the /dev/csmiX,Y location of the relevant drive(s).

Next, download a tool called Smartmontools and install it.

Now, open windows task scheduler and click "Create Task"

- Click run with highest priveleges
- Click the "Triggers" tab
- Click "New"
- In the dropdown menu at the top, set it to "At logon of any user"
- Click the "Actions" tab
- Click "New"
- Action should be set to "Start a program"
- Click "Browse"
- Browse to the location you installed smartmontools (probably "C:\Program Files\smartmontools\bin\smartctl.exe")
- In the "Add arguments" section, add the following -s apm,off /dev/csmiX,Y (where X,Y are the values found in HDD guardian)
- Repeat this process (adding another action) once more if you have a second drive

This will run on startup and disable APM which is causing the clicking noises you're experiencing with this drive.

@Iceman ADDED! :)

Hmm i'm thinking of putting a topic thing at the top which will show bullet points of all the topics in the faq so you can see whats in it before going through expanding all the spoilers. What do you think?

I cannot get the tool to reserve windows 10 on my computer
Go straight to download the ISO, you do not need to "Reserve" for the free upgrade! OR Please read through this post on microsofts help site: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...i/848b5cce-958b-49ae-a132-a999a883265b?auth=1

I have reserved Windows 10, however my download has not started / It just says notify me when ready. Can i use the ISO instead?
Yes! Just run the ISO from inside windows and it will update.
Be wary of leaving the ISO (DISK) or USB (if you are using this kind of media) in the system during reboots as it might try to boot from it rather than continuing the install.

Do you think western digital drives will suffer from this, or be ok, cheers

It only seems to be an issue with certain models of Samsung/Seagate and Hitachi as of now.

You'll soon know if it's a problem though, as your drives will be constantly clicking and slow to access.

i presume i can delete the window.old folder ?

See the first post how to do it "Windows 10 Hints & Tips"

It is possible, but you will not be able to roll back to your previous OS if you do. I just used Macrium to image that anyway. Cleared lots of room on all the Win 10 machines I did it on.

Note: The latest AMD drivers do work with mobile FirePro cards even though they are not listed however they will configure them as Radeons (FirePro mobile cards are just Radeons with a different BIOS) so if you wan't to use FirePro only features you will have to wait for a W10 compatible FirePro driver.
