Windows 10 FAQ

Trying to do a clean install after upgrading, downloaded one of the iso files in the OP, used rufus to create a install USB stick but however i set the bios it comes up as a read error even though everything was created ok.

Ideas?

Did you check the ISO Hash to make sure it was not corrupt? The program i used to create the hash is linked in OP.

use the Microsoft tool to download W10 as it can make a USB stick as well as a ISO file

does sound like a issue with the download\files so use the tool and create a USB stick version, should sort the issue

tool here

When you do the full wipe after upgrade and fresh install at what point does it activate ?

when the PC has internet access, if it doesn't just go to control panel and then update and recovery and then activation

there will be a activate button there and you can use that instead

cool it has done it now, it was popping up asking for a code for a while and then it sorted itself out - i think i am grand now, just installing apps and data back

Guys where is the cheapest place to get a official windows 7 pro 64bit key from, then i can update to windows 10 pro, cheers

do a google search and it should bring some up, if you cant get a W7 one just get a W 8.1 version. cant recommend any places as I've never used them but some people have used G2A to get keys from, again google search will find you the site

Thx for reply mate, yeh i have seen places on the internet for keys as cheap as like £15, but i think there just msdn keys, and they seem to get black listed quickly, want a proper cheap retail really, thx anyway.

Quick note to add, the three pc's I have upgraded have been set to US keyboard by default regardless of it originally being set to UK, not a major issue but annoying all the same.

I don't know if it will help anyone else but I was having trouble installing the 7.08.1821 drivers for my PCI Xonar DG. But I found if you edit (in notepad) the CmSetx.dll which normally looks like this.

[SETUP]
ATYPE=30
INI_PATH=SoftwareDriver\InI
SupportOS=Win7

To this

[SETUP]
ATYPE=30
INI_PATH=SoftwareDriver\InI
SupportOS=donotcare

The driver installs and works fine.

This also works for the win 8.1 8_1_8_1822 beta driver.

on the g2a site (i think) you can get retail copies of keys as well as OEM ones just make sure it states its a retail key

Just ran a fresh install of Win 10 using the iso. Deleted old partition, went through the installation steps to completion and then was hit with an error - code: 0xC004C003. Despite me having a legit copy of win7, it's not allowing me to activate for some reason. Yay!

what version of 7 was you running and what version of W10 are you going too?

I was running win 7 home premium. As far as I recall, I selected win10 home upon installation.

did you upgrade from W7 to W10 first before doing the clean install or did you go for a clean install first without doing the upgrade?

I had W7 and upgraded to W10 and all activated I then do a clean install using the ISO file on a USB stick and formatted the old partition with no issues

I did a clean install. No prior upgrade from Win 7. I have tried entering my win 7 key into "change product key" under the Activation section (settings-update and security-activation") but that doesn't work either and I end up being presented with an other error code 0xc004f050. Any help mucho appreciated:)

You need to upgrade from a valid Windows 7/8/8.1 installation first, in order to magically transform your key to a Windows 10 one. Then you can clean install Windows 10.

Faqqing read the faq. :p
