Windows 10

Yes its on the Fast ring, I downloaded it last night.

Other than changing the look of the login screen a bit, its mainly just a release filled with a load of fixes.

Thanks Skeeter... but do you mean you downloaded a whole new ISO file, or just a small update?

It is just that I can't see anywhere to actually 'force' it to download a file.

I have the Preview option, and 'fast' selected, and obviously automatic upgrades, but still can't see a 'download' option... unless of course it is hidden somewhere in the Developers section?

So any builds before the 29th wont be the RTM?

I thought that usually the RTM was released before the general release date so that the OEMs could put it into new builds.

Usually yes, but they've changed the model with W10, OEM's will get it Jul 29th as well.

I just went to Windows Update and pressed Check Now and it found the 10159 build and downloaded it.

Sucess, though I'm not sure how :

Tried a few things that some people listed further back, though ultimately I think it may have been a time / date 'thing' more than anything else? I dunno...

Thanks... it wasn't there when I checked earlier, but is now telling me that 'fbl_impressive Professional 10159' is available, and has started to download it.

As I am already on build 10158 will it still have to download the whole 3+ Gb again, or just the updated 'bits'?

It is just that it does seem to be taking its time, so I wondered how large the file download was?

If it is going to take a few hours... again!... and as I have got a few other things to be getting on with today, I might just wait until later, and leave it to download a new ISO file overnight, while I am (hopefully!) asleep!

It's a whole new ISO :-) 3.8GB or so.

Andi.

With release just a few weeks away, i'm looking forward to changing from Windows 8. How stable does it look right now for you guys running the preview builds? Do you think it should be a smooth windows launch with little issues?

Seems stable mostly - there are 1-2 things that will cause explorer to crash out with memory read errors but I'd assume that will be fixed in the retail release.

Performance seems a little more varied than Windows 8 - getting some slowdown sometimes - I think this might be due to it having some debugging type features enabled however in the preview (from an educated guess as to the situations it happens in) so might not be the same come retail.

Driver support seems a bit hit and miss - quite a few things that install/work fine driver wise on 7 and 8 have some issues or plain flat out won't install on 10.

On the latest build (10159) been absolutely solid. Upgrade took about 45 minutes but this on a mechanical disk so on an SSD I'd expect it to be better.

It's looking more and more polished. New lock screen and new login screen were the most obvious but everything is looking tidier and more polished.

It detected all my hardware as well which, considering it's a laptop, is something the previous versions couldn't do. Even picking up an old USB to Serial connector as well.

Overall it's pretty nippy, I've found nothing it won't run just yet. The only bug I had on previous versions was the shutdown bug but that doesn't seem present now.

So when I eventually get access to Win 10, does it simply download & install over Win 7 while keeping your old settings / files, or would it be best to save the file on say a memory stick, and then reinstall as normal?

Just need someone to confirm the free-ness of Windows 10!

I'm currently running 10158 preview and have an 'insider' account.

As far as I'm aware, insiders get a free, full (not upgrade) copy of Windows 10. As I'm signed up for this, does that mean my installation logs everything (the logging that people moaned about when the preview first came out)?
