Windows 10

No ads here I use firefox adblock plus add on. LOL

On my third attempt it went straight to a download page... but is telling me it will take 6 hours to complete! :(

One day we be able to get fibre!

EDIT: I can't keep up with the posts on here, but thanks for your confirmation... I will just leave it to get on with things and see how it goes... it has downloaded 60 Mb already, so has quite a way to go yet! :)

Wow, just ran the latest build in VM and I am very very impressed! It is getting so polished and refined and I love the new modern screens which replace legacy - such as control panel etc.

Cant wait for this release now!

I will try uploading to Microsoft OneDrive and share with you. But, at the moment OneDrive uploading is so painful slow (not showing transfer rate speed) but if you sign up userscloud free account (you can download it at 5Mbps transfer rate instead of 250Kbps transfer rate)

Thank you, but as the maximum download speed I can achieve over my so called 'broadband' copper based network is only about 200 Kb/s anyway, I don't think that would really help me at all would it?

The ISO download has reached 460 MB now, so it is getting there... slowly!

I give up OneDrive. (far too slow) as usagescloud was much quicker uploading than OneDrive as usagescloud was 2.5Mbps upload transfer rate but OneDrive upload transfer rate was horrible painful slow at 160Kbps!

I sign up MEGA account as uploading is pretty fast at 2.8Mbps!

I feel for ya - hang in there it'll be worth it.

I do feel for u. Any idea of when is your FTTC available to your area? I just love my FTTC exspecially 20Mbps upload with Plusnet 80/20.

Montala - don't forget to write down as this is your Windows 10 Pro 64 bit build 10158 product key: 8N67H-M3CY9-QT7C4-2TR7M-TXYCV

Righto, managed to get the iso on the web from a supposedly reliable place/person, (I know,I know). I have now done an in place upgrade from my 10147 build - took 20 minutes from start to finish and all good here.

Have not had a chance to look through thoroughly yet - but it certainly feels faster and smoother so far. The only caveat I have had so far is I had to repair Office 16 before I could use Outlook and check my e mails.

More news anon.

Thanks again for the link and the key... I will write that down in a safe place!

Going off topic for a moment, I am keeping a very close eye on the progress of FTTC in my area, which is included in the Borders (Gloucestershire & Herefordshire) Broadband scheme.

As luck would have it, I live in the north of Herefordshire (just south of Ludlow) which will be the last area to be commissioned, but it should all be completed within the next 9 months.

The new cabinet is in place, and powered up, and there are actually two network engineers here at the moment linking the two cabinets together.

There was a bit of a delay as they found that the 'old' cabinet didn't have enough room for the new connections, so it had to be replaced with a wider one... fortunately without anyone loosing their phone or broadband connections, but that has now been sorted out, although I think there are still some lengths of fibre optic to be laid to link us back to the nearest exchange, which is about 6 Km away.

Just as long as I can see some progress every few weeks or so though, I am happy... if not I have a 'hot line' straight through to the Project Manager, who usually manages to get things moving again.

(End of broadband update! ;) )

Don't know how you figure that.

Win7 stable (like Vista SP1/2) but rehash of Vista, going back to Win95 UI wise so nothing special and on its way out in less then five years.

Win8 stable but needed some minor improvements and released a bit prematurely IMHO.

Win8.1 corrected a lot of minor issues with Win8 ,again very stable.

As to ugly?...That's subjective,I could argue a good point and say Win7 or any Windows is ugly compared to a lot of Linux distros( I actually think Vista looks slightly better then Win7).

Win10 looks fine to me,however lets be fair and wait until it's fully released before some of you decide to condemn it.

Looks are very subjective - but there is a difference between a polished look with some effort put into it (even if its not to your tastes) and some amateurish slapped together job.

Windows 7's difference over Vista are mostly fairly subtle but its something some people seem to miss aside from some underlying performance/stability fixes there were also a load of tiny little fixes i.e. stuff changed so you could get to it in 2 steps instead of 3, things moved to categories where most users would expect them to be, etc. and that can really make or break an OS - something a good number of people in this thread and MS seem to have lost sight of somewhat is that an operating system should be as much as possible about enabling the user not forcing a particular user experience on them.

EDIT: I don't think its unfair to be critical of Windows 10 - sure its still in beta/preview state but you'd expect it to be far more advanced both in functionality and aesthetics this close to release - I made a little video just going in as if I'm a new user unfamiliar with the OS but heard I can customise the start menu and with an idea of how I want it to be - a row of small quick icons for stuff like settings, followed by a row of larger live tiles for stuff like weather and then below that medium icons for utility programs - stuff I want easy access to but not my main programs pinned to the task bar...

What a mess... and you can't even see in the video the times I clicked on things and nothing happened or tried to drag/resize things and they didn't respond or took several attempts to make them work - also notice the behaviour with explorer - when I tried to pin it nothing showed, when I tried to drag it in even though the denied thing came up it randomly appeared just after and when I removed it and tried again... nada.

(Obviously I know that currently there are fixed width/height max slots on groups and that some of the things I was trying to do require you to very firmly associate a tile with a group rather than dragging it in its general direction - its a bit of an over exaggerated example of how poor the system works if you try and do anything remotely outside of its very narrow design goal)

I hear what you saying but point was Vista by SP2 was very stable,at least for me,Win7 was just MK2 version of Vista IMHO.

In many ways I consider Win8 to 8.1 more of a change/upgrade then Vista SP2 to Win7 ever was.

As to Win8 well that was their first OS that you could call hybrid or all in one OS where Microsoft were changing direction from a pure desktop OS,obviously that will continue to evolve with Win10 and beyond, something some users or people do not realize, they expect a perfect hybrid or all in one OS from first release ie Win8,sorry Microsoft or virtually most Operating Systems take time to evolve, something some users don't realize especially when you consider the change in direction Microsoft went from, even Linux is evolving.

As to two steps instead of three, most of us pin or customise our OS so its available right a way ie one click, something I've done before XP,you or I could also argue UI usage is also subjective, some users find it easier then others even with the same OS in question.
