Windows 10

I did a totally fresh install, having previously upgraded and not been happy with the result. On install, I took the "skip" option for the product key, and installation proceeded normally and it activated itself once installed. So no problems here with a clean install.

Same here, done a few fresh installs, deleted partitions and let the install set them up again. Skipped both requests for a key because you don't have one, it's tied to your hardware id on Microsoft's servers so you can reinstall all day long. Activated straight away even though I've done BIOS and VBIOS upgrades. This last install I even remembered to set the user up as a local user so I got a user folder named how I wanted it and then changed that user account to my Microsoft account. Then verified my account with the code sent to my mobile, then the sync stuff works. I think the install is smaller this way too, about 18 GB after the addition of various updates.

Can you share what happened when you did a clean install? The other posts after yours suggest the method is safe to do.

The method I did is as follows (in case it helps)

Upgraded from 8.1 - 10 using the official tool in the system tray
After upgraded I ensured it showed as activated
Clean installed by wiping my SSD and installing w10 off the media disk I created
It then activated automatically as soon as it connected to the internet as its tied to your motherboard.

As long as you upgrade and activate first before doing a fresh install you're fine. I also learnt the hard way as I reserved, made media disk, fresh installed before upgrade and it wouldn't activate so had to start at 8.1 and upgrade lol

In addition, Im changing my motherboard soon and will also be able to reactivate and clean install 10 straight away as I will give up my 8.1 retail key to msft and get a 10 one in exchange.
 
Has anyone experienced problems with the default windows apps not launching? On my parents system, when dad clicks on the photos tile nothing happens. If mum logs in and opens it, it runs perfectly.

At the moment it looks like a choice between setting dad up with a completely new user account and transferring everything over, or ditching the photos app (yes I know it's awful but he likes it) and installing something like Gimp instead

Is it possible to exchange windows 8.1 keys for a windows 10 key with out going through the upgrade process.

Nah unfortunately not. You need to upgrade first and then go on the contact app and request that they remove the 8.1 key from you and replace with 10. They will need to remote into your computer to do it.

I did it last night actually in preparation so I went onto the chat and said I upgraded from a windows 8 1 retail(very important its retail) copy and that I want to now deactivate my 8.1 key to receive a 10 key. I got asked the reason and I said its because I will be doing significant hardware changes soon and want to fresh install immediately when I do it.

10 mins later, they connected to my pc, did something in cmd and provided me with a 10 key and advised my 8.1 was now invalid.

Decided to join the Insider Preview stuff again, and got a big update to build 10547. PC now says it's evaluation copy again, and has slowed down hell of a lot during start up. Takes forever for right click to start working on the task bar.
 
How do I report an issue to MS? Would have made sense to have an option somewhere to just click for those on insider builds.
 
What he hell.. I've disabled UAC (a game mod needed it, but I've disabled UAC since vista, it's a waste of time) and now all the photo / mail apps etc don't work!! Stupid locked bs.

I look at screenshots / photos the most so I try to set the jpeg default to Windows Photo Viewer, which apparently doesn't exist anymore. Right I thought, i'll just set it to open jpegs in Chrome for the time being but nope, I can't browse for another app to open jpegs, I can only pick one from the store. Which I can't access due to UAC...

Getting more and more tempted to go back to W7 by the day :(!
