Windows 7 Beta 1 (build 7000) screenshots

I like it SO far..
But my score has gone down to 2.9 because win7 says my IDE HD is slooooww

still a beta so I cant complain..

right guys do i go to vista or windows 7

i did vista through beta but tbh i just went back to xp after a while the layout did my head in but ive messed on with windows 7 in a virtual pc and like it so do i take the leap and go to 7 or back to vista ? (everything is backup so it really dosent bother me if i loose work etc)

Now, bloated or not, Vista is necessity to all of us in IT world.

We have a number of IT clients all of whom still use XP. One of them has 100 seats of a piece of software that won't run under Vista. The upgrade would cost over £8000. Vista just doesn't do anything extra that they need.

And by now we kind of like the aero and quick search in start button whether we are ready to admit it or just moan for the sake of it. However. It is also true, that if we got that quick search and DX10 in XP majority of us would never look back at Vista.

I use Launchy www.launchy.net and it is brill.

Also is DX10 any better than DX9 ?

Can't say I've had any problems with win7 as of yet, everything is stable & i'm using it as my primary OS, it is all up to you really, if you feel comfortable to use BETA software.

I don't use Dreamweaver, Photoshop, Office. But from the products I've used:

Google Chrome (no problems)
Winamp 5.541 (no problems)
Skype 3.8.0.115 (no problems)
Iphonebrowser (slight problem at the start, just needed to run in compatibility mode)
Last.fm (no problems)
Tightvnc (no problems)
Imgburn "newest" (no problems)
itunes 8.0 (no problems)
Virtual clone drive (no problems)
Utorrent 1.8.1 (no problems)
VLC "newest" (not a problem)
Avira Antivir (no problem)
mIRC "newest" (no problems)
Manycam 2.3 (no problems)
DUmeter 4.01 (no problems)
Winrar "newest" (no problems)
Flash/Divx/Java (no problems)

All I've used so far :)

I've heard that Photoshop CS4 works on it, Office is definitely going to work no doubt about that, Not so sure about Dreamweaver.

Once i installed Win7 detected all my drivers apart from Soundcard & Webcam, But that was solved by going to Windows Update & it was there. If your laptop installs all drivers fine on Vista, then it should be ok for win7.

Note I'm using 32bit Win7, so not too sure about the 64bit build & how those programs/drivers work.

damn... i hope not! i dont wanna stay up late. mind you, i'll get it at work tomorrow morning i hope there are still some left.

80% of the way done now, but it is hellishly slow and keeps interrupting every 2 minutes. Normally I get in excess of 2000-3000kb speeds, but I'm getting 20-500 this morning.

I'm getting it from MSDN from Microsoft. It appeared late last night, but I only started downloading this morning.

Programs running on Windows Vista xBit should work on Windows 7 xBit. The "only" problem that can/should arrise is if the program or setup detects an unknown version of windows that it can't handle. Compatibility mode should indeed take care of most of these problems, but not all, these need a quickfix and recompile, shouldn't be major issue.

The key link fails at the moment, but I'll try later. It appears as a normal download would, but I'm not sure how they would normally deal with a beta.
I've installed the leaked version at home, and you can install without entering a key anyway.

**edit** Just looked again, and the link for a key is for a retail key. I doubt they exist yet which is probably why it fails to get one when I ask for it!

30 Days free trial, so you don't HAVE to put in a key at the setup just leave the input text box empty. There are ... tools...to remove the time limit, see the link above.. ;) MSDN gives you a key to activate, you should be able to use the MSDN version longer than 30 days once activated, dunno how long exactly though but there is a limit.
