Windows 7 build 7057

64 bit also out there and quickly downloadable - as there is plenty of interest.
7057 beats sluggish Vista and is superior to XP. XP can now die peacefully. I'm not going back to either XP or Vista.
keznews is good source of news

Running it now. Seems a little more "solid". Like the new Media Center Gadget look and sounds are nice. Icons for favorites still not working in IE8. You can now just hide the destop icons and not desktop "Items". Still cant customise the shortcuts in games explorer though.

So, would you guys recommend using the Windows 7 RC1 over Vista SP1?

I'm intrigued to try Windows 7, but cba with all the reinstalling crap if it's not worth it. Also I can't dual boot as I have no HDD space left!

Can anyone confirm that the following programs work on Windows 7? These are just my essentials really.

KMPlayer (or if I have to, media player classic)
CoreAVC
FFDShow
Winamp
Firefox
Zattoo
CloneCD/DVD Decrypter

I'm pretty confident all of them will, but mainly concerned about KMPlayer/CoreAVC.

Edit: And i guess i can just use Vista x64 drivers for gfx card/chipset/x-fi etc.?

did you have any problems with installing the dual boot Sandman, would love to try 7 myself, but I have a lot of work on my rig that I couldn't justify a format..lol

i would pick up a 2nd hard drive on the cheap. i play with it on my laptop but don't fancy wiping my main rig. it's stable, but like you i have it all set up and running nice

Whats the latest on a final RTM date?

I've heard it could be in a month or two, but just wanted to check. :)

you coming from xp or vista? as for me from vista it's the same just tweaked?

Coming from Vista x64 SP1. Just cant stand the taskbar lol, no quicklaunch? wtf? Ok I can launch things from it, but as soon as its launched the icons gone, so no multiple instances without rightclicking the running program. Also, its great having the taskbar transparent when things are maximised, apart from the fact it makes the text impossible to read on the taskbar! Also, not being able to move the show desktop thing is a bit annoying.

Oh and the fonts. Cleartype is ultra nutty this time round it seems, turn it off and most things look right, except the bookmarks toolbar in FF looks a bit blurry, turn it back on and that looks fine but the rest of the system has cleartype smear all over it. Eugh.

And quicklaunch is basically nerfed, and where the hell has the sidebar gone? I don't want my gadgets just floating around.

My eyes hurt from cleartype.

Why can't I still have the sorting columns when in views other than details? Its very very handy being able to sort pictures by date modified, and having a preview. I'll be back to Vista by midnight methinks!

EDIT: Screw this, I'm going back to Vista. Not found any benefits to Windows 7 yet, sure it might be faster on a low end systems, but I don't have a low end system so I don't care. Vista was a huge leap over XP imo, this is just Vista with some UI tweaks. Hopefully the taskbar/folder view problems will be fixed by release.

? Quicklaunch is there, it's a part of the new taskbar now rightclick a pinned explorer icon to access quicklaunch items for it. Drag items to it to pin them.

It's scary to see a RC already. Vista is going the way of WinME for sure.

Shame really, it's not THAT bad it's just got a bad reputation.
I've been using it since SP1 and can't say I've had any problems with it.

Windows 7 is shaping up to be pretty awesome though.
If it carries on the way it's going then it'll be the first Windows OS I'll buy on release day.

Pah, the install doesn't seem to want to see my RAID drive to install to, any suggestions?

I'm guessing I need drivers from somewhere.

Just about to install W7 to a RAID 0 array using the intel chip on my Gigabyte P35C-DS3R and this is making me think twice (about RAID 0 not W7). What hardware are you running?
