Windows 7 Impressions

Guys I have installed windows 7 on a seperate hard drive to my Vista, but after install i don't get the option for dual booting i.e. everytime i restart my computer it just boots straight to Vista instead of asking me which OS to boot into.

Vista is on my main C: drive and windows 7 to a secondary hard drive. Do i have to turn on some option in my BIOS?

Any help appreciated as its the first time I'm doing anything like this.

So far I'm impressed with the speed of it (not that I'm running it on a slow computer). The new taskbar will take some getting used to, but I'm going to give it some time before I go hyper customisation. The issues I've had are with Adobe CS2 (Aero not working in some programs and golive [bleh] not working correctly).

edit: the show desktop thing is in an annoying place too.

I installed 7 as a virtual machine and so far so good. I prefer the taskbar and action centre, although I had problems using my phone on it as I thought it would come up on the new device part, allowing me to use it straight away, but im sure they will add support for it in the future.

First impressions are very good.

Right so i just installed it on my laptop, and im not all that impressed. :(

I can see why a lot of people are getting excited, i mean its quite pretty (i like the extra transparency features, well for programmes that support it as wimamp seems not to) but it is qutie unresponsive (especially at just scanning for music files on my laptop).

Give it time and it could be good, not jumping onto the ITS BETTER THAN VISTA bandwaggon, mainly as iv warmed to vista a lot recently :) (i will say its not got that xp speed somepeople have mentioned as it still needs a fair bit of resources)

One feature I like is the updated media centre which can access the freeview interactive services (red button/text). Didnt think id ever see that on my pc ;)

Windows 7 it self seems a little jittery compared to vista, maybe due to the basic MS Radeon driver, I dont know.

just installed on seperate hdd along side vista, everything going ok and liking it, only problem is getting drivers, ethernet drivers for asus p5q pro etc i.e motherboard drivers.
anyone know where i can get these drivers from?

Just tried Stalker Clear Sky, v-sync doesn't even work when the games option is set to on either. :(

Runs and looks same in Dx10.1 as it does in Dx9 as well :D, well the only difference is saw, was that the camoflauge netting and the barb wire fences showed up. :p

Can you not just tell it to search and install them from your Vista setup/mobo CD (if its got Vista drivers on it), as you can use Vista drivers, or download them from Asus webby. :)

By any chance does W7 decode AAC lossless (Apple Lossless) out of the box? Would be nice. Even the ability to read the ID3 tags in Windows Explorer would be a bonus :(.

Im really loving it now, only gripe ive got is the v-sync not working, either set to on in the game (if its got the option), or set to on in the CCC. :(

Anyone know what the pre-release WDDM 1.1 is that it wants to download from in the updates, its only 9.3mb, but ive not downed it yet as ive got the Vista 64 8.12's on, so just wondering if i need to down that one.

EDIT: Would it worth using their Windows 7 preview driver instead of the 8.12's ?

i went back to windows vista after using this for a week, too many problems with games like no punkbuster support in cod4 so keep getting kicked, also i get a lot of stuttering in cod5, wow has constant hdd access and crossfire loses performance rather than gains it.

not a clue, i installed the hotfix ones which are possibly the 9.1 early release ones, installed fine, so far not done much still playing with my new phenom, 3dmark went fine, crystal mark gpu part went a little haywire, will get a game or two on later and see how they go but they certainly install and not a blue screen from them yet.

What virus apps you guys running, MS say norton, avg and kaspersky have things for it, I just dl'd the Norton. On past experience I dislike norton though their latest stuff in the past year is supposedly excellent. Having tried the Kaspersky trial recently for vista I have to say i was not impressed, internet security, the firewall basically never shutup and was insanely slow to respond, like open a game, pauses the opening of a game for a good minute or two sometimes before it gives a "hey you wanna run this thing" message, incredibly irritating so not keen on that. AVG, just seems fairly crap the past few years. Just wondering if I'm gonna make a mistake installing Norton :p

Anyone installed any of them and had a virus problem from lack of AV picking it up?

EDIT:- might go with kas or avg, simply because the norton beta wants another 30mins to download at 30kb/s for no apparent reason :p

I'm using the kaspersky workstation beta and so far no problems.

What do you mean "unresponsive"?

Like my response.... :D

Yeah urm anyway its just general desktop usage, like moving open windows around is always a little slow between mouse input and whats on screen (could be as im on my core2 laptop with only 2 gig of ram...)

Also when i was setting winamp to scan my harddrive for my music it took a lot longer than when in vista and made my laptop very unusable (despite being dual core) :(

Its too much of a beta for me right now to get excited

Ive had this feature on my Vista HP Media Centre PC since I set it up. MS released a TV Pack for VMC that gives you the red button options, but its OEM only so requires a clean install and some fiddling to get working at home.

Hi,

Im running this and everything has worked flawlessly. FSX works better than vista, as does Photoshop CS3. Visually its far superior to XP and still better than Vista.

Its much more snappy than Vista. In fact ive just installed this on my mums oldish PC (AMD XP 2600+, 1GB DDR, 200GB HD, Geforce 6200) and it runs faster than vista and virtually as fast as XP on that machine)

Very Happy!

Well the hotfix are a no go, everything is a no go, when i go to uninstall the 8.12's, it just hangs on please wait for the list to be populated, and then if i try to install any other drivers, it hangs again, either at the beginning, or near the end.
