Windows 7 Impressions

I tried my the vista 64 mobo drivers in vista compatibilty mode and it screwed something up, on boot all i got video wise was out of range. I used a sytem restore and its rolled back to a working state.

*edit* still screwed, everytime i install a nvidia driver i get "out of range" on boot.

That's by design for the new Messenger, I believe 8.5 will still close to the notification area.

Ahh, amazing how new features are sometimes worse.

Also, i missed the quick launch on the task bar but ive found out how to get it back. Not sure why they removed it though.

Also, ive just installed live messenger and when you close it is still shown on the taskbar menu rather then just an icon. I guess this will happen with other similar programs.
You can fix that by running the messenger.exe in Vista compatibility mode.

Has anyone else that's had problems installing the Ati drivers figured a way to get em on yet? Nothing i try is working. Can self extract the installer, butwouldn't know which of the gazillion bits and peices to install from that.

I don't feel any different from Vista, Vista for me is a great OS, use it on all machines in the house with no problems, Windows 7 just seems exactly the same with a bit more polish. Feels the same speed on my NC10 to be honest as Vista, doesn't appear snappier (Vista was snappy for me regardless)

It's going to be great to see people and media who come out and say great things about Windows 7 who done Vista to death, you have to wonder sometimes if these people actually used Vista.

Only been playing about with it for an hour or so but it looks and feels just like Vista.

It appears to load and shut down quicker but I'm getting a lot of Nvidia display error reports with the driver provided through Windows Update.

Is there any way to get the icon in the taskbar that used to 'minimize all windows' back? I know theres the new hover/click bit over to the right of the task bar for this, but it was so much easier when it was on the left as thats the side of the screen where all my desktop icons are. Now I have to move the mouse all the way to the right of the screen to view the desktop, then move it all the way back to the left to click on any of the desktop icons! Not very good for the wrist on a 27inch windscreen monitor :S

I just installed the lates 180s from nvidia site,

Company of heroes benches same as vista and had 3 hours of left4dead last night with no issues, Give em a try

ok well I really hated vista so this makes this even more surprising

Windows 7 I really like, it runs excellent on my machine and lets hope they can keep it like that in the final build.

I don't like the new task bar that much but i'll get used to that

tbh the one truely irritating thing I have found so far is that when you close MSN it used to go to the tray now it stays on the task bar

Not really what you're looking for, but you can use Windows Key+D to do the same thing if you don't want to move your mouse across the screen.

do you think they have given us ultimate version so when its released we all buy ultimate and not the premium version

It's nice.. feels very Vista SP2 in terms of speed.

New taskbar is annoying vs Vista but i'm getting used to it. Taskbar buttons "Never Combine" seems to be the best option to avoid most confusion.

Only issues so far are failing to use all 4 speakers on the mobos Realtek HD Audio (in spite of drivers and everything else I can think of being tried) and WMP12 totally went nuts trying to understand my 100 or so ripped to .wav CDs. It basicly turned the lot into one giant 'unknown album' with some 1200 songs in it, and then spent infinite time trying to download album info. Manual song selection and "Update Album Info' is a slow workaround though.

Only other srange bug i've noticed is "Windows defender is not switched on" message on every boot, when it is.

As said elswhere, it feels cleaner and lighter overall vs Vista in terms of looks, and speed.

why would i be getting a 2.9 overall score
its the data transfer rating thats 2.9 which is giving me an overall 2.9 score
any ideas ?

I take it this is the hard drive, as mine has a strangely low rating too. I'm not sure why but the ratings never bother me. Just weird having a C2D system with 2GB RAM and a 4850 coming out with a 3. :D

Out of range normally means that your video card is synching to high for the monitor to display. Tried installing the monitor drivers? Other than that go into safe mode and change the refresh rate to 60 (this is normally the default for most tfts)
