Windows 7 Impressions

I have to say I like it. Im running it on a Pentium D EE @ 3.2Ghz with 1Gb of RAM and it runs more like XP would. I have Vista on that machine as well and it crawls.
W7 is using 70% of my RAM though with only live messenger and IE running :(

After install it found all the drivers for my mobo from windows update. It also found the drivers for my FireGL v7600, but they were rubbish. They crashed at every boot, but I installed the 64bit vista drivers and now it works a treat.

I have to say I like the new taskbar. I find it much quicker to find and do what I want with it.

I agree with wzd about the show desktop button, but I think I read somewhere that this can be moved. Had a look on taskbar settings, but couldn't find anything about it though.

Its about time paint got an overhaul. I like what they've done with it, but I think they could have done a bit more. Maybe have an advanced mode where you can work with layers. Also when you are usinf things like paint brushes, if you paint over one color with another, the colors should mix together.

Not much I can say about the calculator really as I dont use it that much.

I like the Snip application. That will make grabbing things on the screen much quicker.

Overall I am very impressed with what I have seen. Espessially considering that its only a beta and things should be better once the final version is released.

When did SPs increase the speed of the OS?

Not quite sure what you mean, what I meant was.. it feels similar in terms of windows opening, menu's popping up, startup, etc. as the Vista SP2 beta build it replaced on my machine. ie i've not noticed any major difference in performance.. then again, Q6600+8Gb+Raid0 Raptors is a bit of overkill even for Vista/Win7 :)

ive been using win7 for a few weeks. I like it. It seems faster than vista and dosent seem to randomly break as many things.
Ive just installed it onto my new acer netbook which only has 512mb of ram and it works perfectly the only thing that dosen`t work is the wireless but i`m sure that will change soon enough

Really enjoying it so far. :)

Only problem im having is with my Audigy 2. Sound randomly cuts/gets all distorted. if im listening to a song in WMP i can select another and it fixes itself. games need to be restarted. Other than that, installation was a doddle.

Is the general feeling that this build is good enough to use as a primary OS? I'm having some problems with Vista not letting me shrink my current OS drive (even though it's 68% free) so i can't dual boot.

Also, can anyone tell me if any of the following, Ableton Live/Adobe Audition/Maya/Blender/Zbrush 3, have any issues with it?

I don't feel any different from Vista, Vista for me is a great OS, use it on all machines in the house with no problems, Windows 7 just seems exactly the same with a bit more polish. Feels the same speed on my NC10 to be honest as Vista, doesn't appear snappier (Vista was snappy for me regardless)

It's going to be great to see people and media who come out and say great things about Windows 7 who done Vista to death, you have to wonder sometimes if these people actually used Vista.

You've totally hit the nail on the head there. Anyone who's bitched about Vista, and then suddenly says how great Windows 7 is, is effectively admitting that they just rubbished Vista for the sake of it as there is no difference performance wise between the 2 OSes. It will certainly discredit an awful lot of people, and I can't wait to see them eat their own words :)

Anyone getting thier X-Fi Card working?

I tried to download the drivers and I did but they dont work with Windows 7 they are looking for an OS either Xp are Better

That didn't work for me either , using VISTA compatible mode... It installs but comes up with a ! in device manager and no device found in sound control.

I see some peoples specs in their signatures. But just wondering if it would be "smooth" in a laptop with 1gb RAM and 1.4ghz pentium m CPU.

Vista In all But Name

Just gave my 2 beta keys away in the other thread.

Uninstalled after a few hours as this is just an unstable version of Vista with different appearance and tweaks to increase speed. Buggy as hell when you try to customise and also lacking X58 support as it will not install certain system level device drivers even in Vista compatability mode. Does not like my Dolby Home Theatre onboard sound system either so it had to go as the sound was not working properly.

Its shockingly close to Vista anyway as expected and if this forces the XP crowd who hate Vista to adopt 7 then they are much dumber than I already thought they were. Vista is stable, fast & has excellent hardware + software support now. 7 is just the ME version of Vista hopefully without the bugs but a completely uncalled for OS as its primary objective is obviously to bring onboard the Vista haters and it adds very little which Vista will not get in SP2 anyway.

I would also expect this OS to be on sale in the Q4 of this year before Xmas as MS know not to miss that period again after Vista slipped 2 months past it they are unlikely to repeat that costly mistake.

Shock horror, beta release of an OS has bugs. If you're finding it unstable, maybe you should send the feedback to Microsoft? Why waste a licence key that someone else could have used to provide feedback if you're just going to uninstall it as soon as you see a bug?

Did you not read my post as the first sentence mentioned that I had already given my 2 keys away. http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showpost.php?p=13260291&postcount=1311

MS can get feedback from the other 2,499,999. Not providing decent X58 support is a little silly IMO I got 2 legit copies of Vista as my main OSes and can wait until when/if ever 7 is a worthy upgrade.
