Windows 7

I am using Windows 7 right now with all the unlocked features (taskbar etc) and can report that it runs really well and I have had no problems after 24 hours of use.
All drivers were found after one update and I have had no problems reported by the OS except it doesnt like AVG free much but it isnt supported so cant complain.
It feels just like an upgraded version of Vista and definitely what it should have been like originally.
As for the new taskbar: I turned off grouping items and I think it works really well. If you have two of the same type of window open (e.g. two explorer windows) they go right next to each other, while different window types have a small gap between them. This is useful when you have a lot of windows open but do not want the group option. Hovering the mouse over one of the taskbar items brings up previews which can then be clicked.
Il include some screenshots if anyone is interested?

As for UAE...it is much improved and hardly ever pops up, and when it does the rest of the screen is still clickable.

WMP12 is really good too as well as the dragging windows to the sides or top of the screen option.

Basically if you are the type to torrent then give it a go because it works fine and is possibly useable full time even now.

Note the glow over the taskbar!

If anyone wants screens of something in particular let me know.

I think I might try the beta of Windows 7. It'll be interesting to see where ms are heading, though it'll be a bit early to be able to tell if it's much of an improvement over Vista.

Visually it looks like Vista other than the chunky taskbar. How does it differ performance wise?

It's not hugely different. Other than changes in the way things are done and things look, nothing much 'behind the scenes' is likely to change significantly - this was all done in Vista. Now they're making use of it and improving useability and overall experience.

Think of it as 7 is to Vista what XP was to 2000 (almost!)

Windows 7 32 bit compared to vista 32 bit both on my system (see spec below):
Boot time is almost identical.
OS install time is around 30 mins from loading disc to first view of desktop.
Windows 7 was getting a bit slow when moving files from two of my hard drives while trying to use IE....this wouldnt happen in Vista.
Otherwise performance is similar though windows 7 seems to use about 200mb ram less on average.

What happened to the completely new UI that was rumored a while back? I was interested to see a move away from the taskbar TBH.

Does it use less memory?

How did you get it? Torrent or you with MSDN or something?

That new taskbar is vile, it's like a system for the short-sighted :(

Presumably its to make it more touch friendly, tbh I like the idea of a touch screen desktop, but only if the cost of them come down, replacing my 22 inch monitor for a touch model would cost a fortune!

Touchscreen is stupid and im sure im not the only one who thinks its easier to click that stretch your arm across the desk to touch a screen.

Well I think touchscreen would be good if the monitor was on the desk surface, tilted up abit, but then again could cause problems for neck. In the normal position a monitor is then touch screen is kinda pointless yea I agree.
