Windows 7

To be honest I am staggered by the amount of FUD that is spread about Windows 7. Even "respectable" names like Mary Jo Foley are in on it. She was raving about MinWin a year or so ago. And just the other day I saw her post an article clarifying what MinWin is and that she was wrong in her original articles.

It's completely stupid that people with no knowledge of how operating systems work and evolve are allowed to write articles on them.

She may well have been "watching Microsoft for 20 years" but she clearly hasn't learnt a single thing on the engineering side at all in that time.

I'm currently trying the beta on a work laptop and i'm impressed with how fast it seems to be running but having said that vista always seemed to run this well for me...

I do have one problem with the install though and that is that the sidebar gadgets are not working.

When i try to load the gadget menu up nothing happens. I've reinstalled it twice but it doesn't want to work still :(

Has this happened to anyone else?

nvidia will release drivers about 2 months after the W7 release day, and they'll be broken :p

(nvidia owner)

Yay windows 7 another GUI upgrade on top of Vista. Well Vista GUI was crap which is why I went back to classic. Don't see the point of shelling out another £100 for a teletubby interface. Strip away all the crap and you're left with Vista.

It's not actually just a GUI update.

My ram usage at the moment is 20%, without any tweaks and that is lower than Vista with tweaks and with 4GB ram, currently running the 32bit version so thats pretty decent memory usage!

Anyway to get fan speed control in Windows 7? Speedfan does not seem to want to work.

but Win 7 still using NT 6.1 and use some of Vista core kernel -- just few changes, redesigned and sort out problems in hardwares so still same some features as Vista. better wait until final release come out in 2009-2011 to see if MS change any features in last minutes - it too early to try out Win 7 cos MS usual change some of it in W7 after Xmas...

It'll be released in 2009, certainly wont be waiting untill 2011.

I dont think it will massively change from what it is now, usually what the open beta's are like is what the finished article will be like, at least it was with Vista, and pre beta is what people have now and the Beta is not far away (December)

Why must MS force us to use the "new" desktop bar? I LOVE the classic bar .. I've used it in 2k, in XP, in 2k3 and now in 2k8.
How silly will "Windows 7 Server" look with an eye-candy toolbar ...
