The update for Windows 8.1 came out today. So far I have been unable to get it. I have classic shell installed. Should I get the update via windows update in the control panel or the metro app store thing?

It's interesting to note that this is a mandatory update pushing UI and other system behaviour changes.

Admins supporting 8.1 don't really have much say in the matter. The point where we reach a stable UI can't come quick enough in my opinion.

With Update 2 looking likely to feature "Modern Menu" and windowed metro apps the goalposts will have been moved three or four times in the space of one major release.

Before you know it Win9 will be here and back to new changes yet again, hehe regardless I'm always ready :) .

The difference is Windows 9 will be a discrete version i.e. you have a large amount of control over whether you upgrade to it or not.

Anybody in the maintenance phase for 8.1 it just going to have to "deal with it" because no update = no further patches until you do. I'm not saying the changes are bad, and I can see why it's a mandatory update, but it's a pain nonetheless.

The continual refinements are actually equally if not more disruptive than the original Windows 8 release. Not that you'd hear that in the tech press mind you, because it's at odds with the narrative they've been pushing for the last two years.

I have just had five updates appear on WU,however not the same ones in link above, ones I've just installed via WU below.
