Windows 8 breakthrough !

I think the reason most people don't need Windows 8 (apart from all the previous problems with it) is simply that it doesn't represent a value for money upgrade over Windows 7, for many people.

A lot of people don't upgrade at all regardless(I did state a lot of colleges/companies etc still using XP),besides I purchased two Win8 Pro operating systems for under £50 when they had the special offer, that's great value for money and way cheaper then a single Win7 OS that I purchased,so it depends how you look at it.

FYI no problems or issues with my Win8 Pro PCs,got them all running great, not rocket science to use.

Hmm that is struggling to and finally past Vista is a pretty big condemnation for an OS not a reason to celebrate.

I liked Vista and thought it was a good OS so again depends on how you look it at,I don't go by stats or all the FUD crap on the net ,but by personal experience using the OS in question and in my case it's years( for XP,Vista,7 and 8 if you include Win8 beta) not hours or days.

People still seem to not realise its a very different market to when win7 or XP was released, pc sales are on the decline, no new os is going to halt that decline.
There's the fact people simply don't need to upgrade. Win7/XP/vista are all very good and old pcs still have enough grunt.
Those who do upgrade regularly, show a strong uptake of win8 (steam)

Todays hardware technology as well, you have multimedia consoles , smartphones, tablets etc ..so desktop PCs are not needed for the average user.

I can remember waiting 20 to 30 mins for a game to load via cassette tape on my Commodore 64 lol, how things have moved on.

.

Indeed, a lot of family's are replacing desktops with tablets, fr a start they are mobile devices so can be used more often, so better value for money. And most people don't need more than a mobile OS.
The biggest downfall of win8 and it has been an utter shamble is the tablet market, over price, under speced tablets, no release dates, late release dates and not in shops.

XP is also probably the most pirated OS as well,a lot of home users and even colleges are slow to upgrade,I went to my local college recently and they were still using XP,it was like me going back to 2001 lol scary.

Also Win8 is hardest OS to hack key wise ,older versions ie XP,Vista,Win7 is easy and I do wonder how many illegal copies are out there,(yes all my Windows are legit before you ask).

We still use use XP here..German bank. :(

Probably overwhelmed at the inclusion of two major features that should have been there in the first place. :p

More like they simply applauded the bit they knew they were supposed too. Neither of these changes really make a difference.

Without start button: You click in the bottom right to access Metro or the jump menu.
With start button: You click in the bottom right to access Metro or the jump menu, and the taskbar is a tad more bloated.

As for booting to the desktop, it only makes a difference in peoples heads, whats the first thing you will do when booting to the desktop? you either launch a program, open a folder or open Metro, the first two could be done from Metro just as easily, now however the third task takes slightly longer.

Moving backwards != progress :(

+1.

I really do not understand the objections. The problem is all the "uninstalled it within 24hrs" people who didn't get used to it. 2 weeks is what it takes, and after that you realise that it works exactly the same way as w7. I understand not upgrading because frankly it isn't worth the current price if you have W7 (upgrade was good value though). Sure, there isn't much difference, but that's why I don't see why people hate it so much. It's the same bloody OS with minor changes! All the rage seems unjustified to me.

Boot to desktop? O.M.G. Now I don't have to hit enter to see the desktop before going back into metro to do something! Start menu? I have one. But it's bigger and easier to navigate. It just seems like W8 is cool to hate. Let's just have W7 for 12 years like we did with XP (which is in dire need of retirement).

MS have missed the boat. Their hardware is not selling at all and they will take another hit when the Valve Steam Box comes out.

Also Ubuntu Touch is looking very good and FREE, I for one can't wait for the Valve Steam Box to come out so I can dump windows for gaming

Our office just bought 64 of these micro atx boxes to replace our ancient pentium xp stations :D
And look what OS they're running ;)

If Valve can make an OS that's akin to the current Steam Big Picture mode i'll be all over it.

I currently have a separate user account that boots straight into Steam Big Picture as the shell for when I just want to game. It's just like having a console but with the power of a PC.

It should be Linux based OS and steam are converting the games for it so looking good at the moment.

Also you can up grade the hard ware unlike the xbox\ps4.

I think Valve will find they've bitten off more than they can chew going head to head with Windows on the gaming PC scene.

It would be nice for gamers to have a minimal OS to use as a platform, but it doesn't quite work like that.

Anyone who seriously thinks that the Valve Steam Box will eat into PC sales has a very skewed idea of the market. PC sales will continue to decline because people have found different devices to browse the web on, but the Steam Box won't be a contributing factor to this.

This, one of the big things people miss is no Windows, no Direct3D. The are currently 2068 games on steam of which 446 work on OSX and 130 work on Linux. Than means that just under a quarter of the games work on OSX in OpenGL (and when they do performance is usually affected) and that's a platform many developers are actively targeting these days, by comparison only one 16th of the games work in Linux.

So it's more expensive than a PC, does less than a PC, less polished than Xbox or PS4, has less games than any of them and mandates Steams draconian DRM of no sales/transfers etc of the games you buy.

Yeah, good luck with that...

There is the potential for an absolute bloodbath once XP goes out of support. It wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if some groups were sitting on zero day exploits just waiting until they know a patch won't be forthcoming.

WOW you must work for stream knowing all that and while were at it what's this week lotto numbers? oh that's right you don't know ;)

I remember loads of people saying "the Google G1 will never take off" now android OS has got 70% of the market :)

I only use windows for games that's it. My tablet\phone\Nas\PC ect are all Linux based.

Its a lie businesses are never going to use Windows 8 grr pitchforks etc etc etc

All OEM licensing will probably be Windows 8 now, but Volume Licensing lets you run what you want. All our recent Dell Optiplex orders have had Windows 8 licenses but been imaged for 7 Enterprise.
