Windows 8 - Classic Shell (Windows 7 Style)

Rich: Is there any way to display the temp on Metro via CoreTemp and Afterburner? I'm addicted to watching the little numbers change in Windows 7 and not sure I can cope without them showing at all times :o

Not that I'm aware of....yet.

I'm willing to bet once it's out and a bit more mainstream, both of them will release an "app" for metro.

Not sure it's worth it myself, I do spend pretty much all my time browsing, so I have the task bar.

Not sure why desktop on Windows RT is relevant in this thread though. It's not as though there'll be any way you can install any of these classic shells/start menu hacks to it.

Microsoft are pushing the Metro UI quite hard but it's not proving to be very popular. We'll all be on Windows 8 at some point so you might as well embrace it now.

I don't think we can make that judgement until it's been out for a while. The reaction in tech circles is mixed but generally improves over time.

The interesting numbers to watch will be the return rates.

Unless people decide to skip it and see what the next one brings.

Unless it's a complete and utter failure it'll be in Windows 9. Microsoft are looking at releasing a new o/s every 2-3 years so it wouldn't be too long to wait anyway.

People just hate change, currently it's what people are moaning about and will affect their buying choice. Once it becomes the norm they won't care.

It's the learning curve between changes. People have to learn how to fix as well as use. Some people don't care about the change if it isn't going to benefit them. I would never benefit from Windows 8 over what we have today.

If people don't like I don't get why they have to come in every Windows x thread (it happens every time there's a new version to different degrees) and cry about it.

Simple answer is just let everyone get on with what they want to get on with, and if you don't like it don't upgrade. Always strikes me as the complainers want the latest thing, but don't want any change.

I've just installed this onto my Windows 8 VM - so much better! Think I'll be upgrading to Windows 8 now to take advantage of all the under the bonnet improvements.

^ Agreed! It definitely is more responsive than W7 despite the fact I was using an older build (8400). It's surprising because Windows 7 is very fast itself.

I've not really tried it with any heavy duty apps or processing. I assume they would not be much effected. Its mainly browsing and GUI, OS functionality that's faster. I think more of the OS is multi-threaded than before.

On a slightly separate issue, I've noticed any old single threaded machines people ask me to fix (late P4's Xeons) are almost unusable now, especially on the web. However any dual core machine is still fine. Even with low RAM. I think W8 will breath new life into some of these machines if they are still on XP.

That's what I'm seeing as well, there was a noticeable difference between previews and RTM when they removed Aero and I'm guessing this has made a difference too.
