Windows 8 Consumer Preview Thread

I don't think the out of box UI primer is enough personally. It basically consists of "Move your mouse cursor into any corner" and a little animation showing the charms bar appear repeating three times. They really are relying on people exploring by themselves.

The GB English version of Windows 8 means that you will get the British spellings used thru out the Windows 8 system, dialogues/options and other system messages.

That's a good idea, strange why Microsoft have never done that in the past.:D

I see no compelling reason to upgrade. 7 is more than good enough for me.

Doesn't matter if metro really isn't that bad. I'm not going to go out and buy a new OS because "it isn't as bad as you think."

If I'm going to go and and buy a new OS, it's because I think I can't live without it.

Not sure why you're quoting me...as you clearly didn't read the discussion and have taken my quote out of context. Actually if you read the full post, you'll see you're actually agreeing with me ;)

Definitely, it's a nice touch, but nowhere near enough.

I find the removal of Aero more "eye burning" than I'd expected. Though there is still an degree of transparency on the taskbar.

I don't know about you theheyes, but I'm finding the RTM faster than either CP or RP on the same hardware, which I guess is partly to be expected, but nice nonetheless.

I'm expecting MS to be putting a lot of work on the actual apps now before 26/10. One example is the Mail app, it still doesn't work with my domain mails linked as POP3's via a MS account - despite reporting this during CP and RP.

They need to get things like this sorted, and sorted quickly, as at the moment using the webpage for Outlook is far better than using the Win 8 App.

I don't understand why MS do this. Back in Vista, at least MS were trying to improve but didn't get it right. Now Win8's new style is simply shooting on their own foot!

No. Start menu has gone and will never return. Learn the new way. It is superior in most as and the bits it slightly fails at, re early used these days. I mean no often do you go into deep settings on modern computers. Even then it hardly takes hours to get there.
Good think is there has been a shift recently, seems its warmed to a lot of people through the beta process.

Is there anyway that I can get back the old start menu without installing any third party utility?

Stelly

Yes! Install ViStart and get a start menu back. Mind, by the time you have used a Windows 8 system for a week or so, you will have thing organised and either use the Quick Launch Bar or desktop shortcuts for you applications or modify the 'Metro' interface to be a handy start menu.

What I think they should have done is add a few more similar animations for the left edge UIs, and also some kind of hint at how to access the Metro app context menus. I understand that they trying not to overload the user on first run but I don't think they have gone far enough. The first half hour or so of the Windows 8 experience is going to be frustrating for a lot of people which is a shame because, as they say, you don't get a second chance at a first impression.

I think the new style looks great. I really like it and it definitely adds a bit more fit and finish.

Actually, yes. I usually take general "seems to run faster" comments with a pinch of salt but it's definitely more responsive than the RP on my MacBook Pro. Are you using an SSD or spinning disk?

Definitely. It wouldn't surprise me if we saw a flurry of updates to the apps in the middle of October now that Windows 8 is done and they can focus some more resources on the apps themselves.

I'm not too worried about it personally because if the WinRT apps aren't good enough for desktop usage then I'll just carry on without them.

Totally agree, as evidenced by practically every thread I've read there's always a lot of negative feedback. And it's usually from people who have only used it for a few hours at most.

I think it's certain colours, I had it set to auto colour, so it changed when I chose a backdrop picture and just looked

SSD's, so a like for like comparison as it's the same machine that had RP on it. Haven't had the guts to put it on my main machine yet, want to update the BIOS meaning re-doing my overclocks and it's running NVidia Surround so apprehensive about that working OOB!

Yep that's what I'm expecting too. I downloaded a few of the MS card games that weren't there in RP, they're really nicely polished. Let's hope the existing stuff gets polished to the same standard.

Anyone been able to work out how to choose which drive Metro apps install onto (i.e. my D: "apps" drive rather than C: "OS")?

No, but I'm going to go for a look :)

I'd like to know about Media Center too...what the plans are for MSDN/TechNet. Out of interest the RP key won't work, and you get an error if you try to buy it (not unexpected) :)

The apps themselves are installed to a hidden/protected folder in C:\Program Files\WindowsApps

Settings seem to be in C:\users\username\appdata\local\packages

Not tried but I'd expect you'd be able to move them to an alternative drive using a junction point with mklink.
