Windows 8 Consumer Preview Thread

The "get go" is October 26th.

It hasn't worked from install on the CP or the RP.
It isn't working from the RTM which is still "final"

Asus have beta drivers available on their site for Windows 8. there are available for download. might be worth a try...

Where? I see none.
Unless it's the FTP site, and "Asus FTP" brings up nothing, only the older dead link for me.
What's the link?

EDIT : Got it on the FTP, can't find anything for Windows 8 drivers for sound cards.

You are probably right on this - I've seen a 'leaked document' that purports to show Windows 9 released in 2014 - just 2 years. I think MS hopes to make more out of us by getting us to update more frequently. I juts wonder how the 'average guy' who just uses 'Metro' apps is going to feel being asked to shell out after only 2 years.

There is the possibility that MS might be listening to its users about 'Metro' but I suspect Windows 9 will just be an improved 'Metro' interface and maybe a name to replace 'Metro' that is snappier than 'Windows 8 Applications'!

Microsoft said before the release of Vista that they will be working towards 2 year windows cycles. They didn't want another lingering OS like Win 2000 and XP with service pack after service pack.

Hence why we seen Windows 7 two years after Vista, and Windows 8 two years after Windows 7. Also why we will see Windows 9 in 2014.

OK, Martini1991, you just need to go to the Asus site, choose you product within support and you can choose an OS. I chose Windows 8 64bit for my own motherboard as an example. See this

Yeah, nothing for Asus Xonar Essence STX.
Besides that most stuff works fine on W7 drivers, even in CP you could just throw W7 drivers and everything would pretty much work fine.

Can't for the life of me get control panel on my Xonar card to work, problem pretty much everyone is facing.
Last driver was over a year ago.
Abysmal support from Asus.

It's a problem with GFWL is it not? It sounds like exactly the sort of bug you'd fix during the RTM phase.

But there's been fixes for it since the CP etc, why haven't they been implemented into the next release (The RP) and then the RTM?

I get what you're insinuating, if the problems none existent come official release to general populace it's a none issue, to some degree I agree.

However it's no good when they're "Come check your hardware/software with the evaluation enterprise edition" when their own software doesn't work from the install, at least in my opinion.

But the point is to give me the CHOICE. I can't see Metro ever being the #1 environment for a DESKTOP, at home or at work. It does look like a nice Table/Phone UI, but it will always be second fiddle on a Desktop imo.
Metro is nice for consuming big shiny content, one thing at a time. The complete opposite of what most Desktop use it, the clues in the name lol. Windows, Metro has mde it just Window.

90% of home users basically use their desk/top laptop as a facebook machine. A few more do general web/email. Metro would be fine for them. Remember us lot here are in the minority in the way we use our computers.

In the workplace? Different story. Flicking between outlook, excel and IE is my main use. With 4 or 5 spreadsheets open. Metro *will* slow that down in its current form. Well not Metro really, just the desktop app could do with a little tinkering. Like Alt-Tab working as we are used to.

Sure is, but Steam say they don't support Windows 8 until it comes out. I would have thought they would be working on it and fixing problems now to keep their customers happy who try the new OS out.

I didn't realize they had fixed it in the interim. I guess it's just boiling down to resources and priority but I would be surprised if it wasn't good to go before general availability for the reason you mentioned.

I wouldn't surprise me if Valve arbitrarily delayed support initially considering their opinion of Windows 8.

Not an MS fix.
You literally just mess around trying to install GFWL and eventually it'll install and work :p

Unless they intentionally modify their software, delaying support wouldn't matter too much if everything's working okay, since Steam doesn't have any issues with Windows 8 running and launching games.

You're right. The generic desktop PC of the future is probably going to be a touch screen, all-in-one form factor running some variant of Windows RT. Intel, ARM, whatever. Low power, silent, fanless etc.

The general population have been treating PCs like devices/appliances for decades. We're finally getting to the point where they behave like one.

That's good then. :)

I'm not really a gamer so I can't say I've experienced all the nuances with Steam etc. but from my limited contact with GFWL it's been complete garbage anyway so not much has changed. :p

Didn't have to mess around at all when I installed GFWL the other day. Just ran the installer, waited for it to finish, then started playing MS Flight. All worked fine as far as I could see.

ALt+Tab is working fine for me. I can quickly flick between different apps, without problems.

I installed Windows 8 Pro. I use my machine for gaming, and development.

I use MS Office, VLC, IIS, Text Editor, VS 2012, MSN, Firefox, Navicat for MySQL, and Filezilla.

I have no problems using any of that together, and switching between them. Still waiting on a couple of driver updates and an app or too to be updated, but its all still usable.

I rarely need to use Metro. I really don't see what the problem is with Windows 8. Some people just seem to use Metro as an excuse.

I thought computer enthusiasts were meant to tinker and play with new stuff. Do you think that you'd sat/stood using computers if the original pioneers had such a defeatist attitude?
