Windows 8 Consumer Preview Thread

They need to add some kind of 'show all apps from this manufacturer' to the Store.

It feels a bit lacking compared to the the Google Play Store

Prescott, replied to this before - but you must have missed it - Use the Windows 8 Charm Search, and select Store.

The search is actually pretty good - but took me a little time to get used to it - as it allows you to change what app (including browser) you want to search against, no rekeying the same search term in different things :)

The search is another of those things that you need to get used to. I was looking for a search bar myself when I first used the store and it downs to years and years of conditioning to look for it.

Thanks! I didn't see your earlier reply.

It does beg the question, though, why hide it in a corner like that rather than choose the store and have a search function right there. I bet no many people find this particular search function on their own!

I know what you mean which is why it takes a bit of getting used to, but it's a single standard search across Windows 8 and compatible apps. One search to do it all.

We've all got conditioned to everything having it's own search, once we get used to universal search I think we'll find it awkward going back.

I'm sure you are right, and it is a handy tool, but for those of us used to Windows over numerous iterations (I started with Windows 1 on an Amstrad 8088 machine!) It will take a while to relearn this sort of thing.

OH, and 'Windows Key +f' does it too.

Or WIN+"type search" and then choose the type of search you want.

If you're used to using the WIN key to search on the old menu, then it'll come a bit easier - just need to remember the app/category you want to search on.

But yep you're right, it takes some re-conditioning, but at least you're giving it a real go :)

Looking at Windows 8, is there a way to change the installation directory for the apps you download from store?
Seems bad to fill up and keep adding/removing files from everyone's nice new SSDs, Especially with there limited space.

Setting up scheduled tasks for 'on startup' don't seem to work until you fire up the Desktop, so all the things I need to get going before I even login (maybe) are just sat there until I sign into Metro and then 'start' the Desktop. Any way around this? I'm really trying here but it's getting more and more tempting to switch back to W7!

i wouldnt worry about the writing to the ssd, but i can understand wanting to move the folder because of a lack of space. My folder is only sitting at 1gb though - just how many apps have you downloaded? lol

It's just another BS, inaccurate baiting rant tbh.

I honestly agree with most of it. If you could 'swap' the Metro/Desktop relationship i.e. Metro is an App within Desktop it would be dramatically improved for desktop use IMO. I like Metro as a touch interface, but I don't need nor really want it on my desktop. I wouldn't mind being able to have portions of it windowed on my desktop though, that would be cool. Like the sports app etc. If I could have that windowed on my 2nd screen within Desktop that'd be a nice touch.

It's a shame because the task manager/explorer improvements are great, and it's bloody quick. I just find myself spending half my time thinking 'right so how can I do X now?'

The duality of IE is dodgy. It is something you can completely avoid however on the desktop. I don't think I have EVER opened it on my work laptop.

I'm not certain (as I've not got round to it yet), but I'd expect a directory junction using mklink may work to move it to another drive.

That article pretty much make sense about Windows 8, I'm still probably gonna switch to it. I guess Windows 8 is like piloting a jumbo jet, at first, it's extremely complicated and scary, but once you've qualified as a pilot, it's easy!

Whilst on the other hand, all other Windows are like riding a bicycle.
