Windows 8 Consumer Preview Thread

I see, to be blunt, the problem is you, your doing something wrong.

Yup clearly i am the problem when the vast majority of people hate metro and are using hacks etc to avoid it lol.

The only way this OS is usable is with start8, or not installing it at all and using the disc as a coaster.

That is just what people said about XP and 4gig and look what happened.

I have 32Gb installed now, am working on replacing that with 8GB modules as and when special offers come up to go to 64GB, and could (if they became affordable enough) see me going to 8 x 16GB if only my mobo would support it..

I spent a fair bit of time swearing at W8 last night, but only because Im still getting used to it and don't understand fully how metro works yet. Im willing to admit it is me though and will just have to go through some online resources until I get the hang of it as I can see the potential of metro, even for desktop use.
The start menu is a hangover from W95 days and there are better ways to do things now, we just need to relearn a few things

I've never heard such poppycock.

Considering this site is full of computer literate people, I've never read such huge amounts of bullcrap before.

or you could actually take the time to learn a new way to do things and then customise your experience to suit the way you work - nothing stays the same for ever and change is inevitable in IT.

no grace period any more so rearm is useless.
i was debating installing rtm now and putting the key in later but this now seems risky.

Well if you had access to a genuine RTM version now you would normally have a key, and also by default the key is required during install as it defines whether Win8 or Win8 Pro is installed (they both use the same image).

Maybe it's just me, but when it's my OS I like to know it's from a genuine source so I would wait a bit longer.

Do you have a source for that claim?
ofc

"a big misstep for microsoft"

"one word: fail"

"windows 8 for desktop users is, in a word "bad""

etc etc

Love change, when its for the better, when its for the worse then it sucks, for this reason windows 8 sucks.

My guess would be personal opinion and misinformed suspicions :P

The first two results that gives are positive reviews, the ones you linked are misguided rantings, case in point the "one word: fail" one, the authour is basically ranting about how bad the O/S is because he doesn't know how to use it properly.

ROFL. Nice try ;)

How do a few opinions confirm or deny that it represents the "vast majority" (in your words)? And the very first link in the search you provided gives a 4.5 out of 5 from TechRadar.

I understand if you don't like it, and I understand that a lot of people don't like it, but stop spreading rubbish by making claims that cannot be backed up.

probably journalists aren't really in so good a position to review a complicated thing like an OS as it takes too long to learn the best ways to use it and explore the features. It looks to me that it is being positively received by most people on the forum who have taken time to get into it though.

Everybody who bashes Metro seems to overlook this:

That's a screenshot of me rightclicking in the bottom left corner, lots of useful things, most of which are now much easier to access than via the Start menu.

Not only do the Metro changes bring improvements to launching programs they also aide power users.

Yes and no ubersonic.

Most people aren't prepared to relearn before they dismiss it, so they're never going to get as far as the Power menu (WIN + X also launches it too).

After nearly 20 years of the old set up, it's going to take some time to get up to speed - how long will depend on how they used the taskbar and start menu on earlier Windows.

Anyone who's not tried to familiarise themselves with the changes, and there's a lot who give the impression they've used it for less than a few days, really have no credibility.

Under the hood it still does everything a Windows OS should do, but with improvements! How can anyone not want that!?

Start menu was always a horrible nested pain to use anyway, only 7 made it more straight forward. People will be fine when they find whatever shortcut works for them, I did not know that win x menu.
20 years ago I was fine with dos, you could store all the common commands on the buffer and just press up arrow and return, also beats start menu :p

copy con ppgo.bat for whatever you want to execute, windows has always had too much junk added on and not nearly close to instant like a keystroke is. start menu was far from a great idea or quick.
Didnt they remove file explorer from one windows version, that was a terrible idea. I can remember when explorer was the desktop/start

What i've found quite surprising is how many people seem to believe that an operating system hinges round the start menu, and that without it its suddenly unusable. I guess if the only OS you've used is windows sometime in the last 15 years, then you could be forgiven for thinking that, however those arent the sort of people who i'd really class as computer enthusiast or computer literate, rather just computer users.

Personally i'm champing at the bit for it to be released so i can get the pro version and upgrade my ram as i need more than 16gb and am currently on win 7 home premium, out of interest, is there a memory limit on the consumer preview? i havent enough ram to test it lol.

kids these days dont know how good they have it, i remember the days of dos when you had to have various boot disks for different games because some needed more base memory or extended memory etc etc, hours of fiddling with batch files and config files just to get the game working. Now all they have to complain about is no bleeding start menu. grumble grumble.

On RTM the maximum memory allowed is 128GB on Windows 8 Core, and 512GB on Windows 8 Pro and Enterprise.

Should be enough. :p
