Windows 8 Consumer Preview Thread

so if i install the consumer preview, how easy would the conversion from that to the retail product - I'm assuming just activate it with key and download any updates?

Or does anybody know of any different?

Yeah I know where it should be its just not there on systems I have tested, may I ask which mainboard you have?

Also on startup do you have the blue Windows logo or the mainboard splahscreen displayed?

I'm running an Asus Rampage IV Extreme (BIOS 2105). I get the ROG logo, but can change this in the BIOS settings.

Not sure why it's not showing for you? Do you have the 100MB EFI hidden partition?

I'm a bit confused now. I was under the impression that if you logged in with a Microsoft account, your Start menu/apps settings would be saved so that if you logged in elsewhere, everything would appear as you wanted it.

I just reloaded the laptop (swapped hard disks) and the Start menu has gone back to default and my installed apps were not installed automatically for me.

Maybe I'm barking up the wrong tree.

Yep, that's what I've seen too. It saves your history, favourites, desktop image and you'll be able to see what apps you've previously bought and can install them - though curiously I haven't found a way to permanently remove apps I've previously tried but no longer want - they appear in the list again on every new reinstall. Also any IE shortcuts you've created on your Start Screen are brought over.

So close, but still so far MS...

This is a bit worrying! I thought part of the point of using an account linked to a hotmail / outlook email address was that this stuff was synced. If that's not the case, why bother using the email address and giving more data to Microsoft?

Of course, traditional backup is there in Windows 8, only file history, but if that is turned on things ought to be being saved anyway.

What isn't it syncing?

Start Screen layout and any configuration (such as standard apps you've unpinned, groups you've created, show more tiles etc)
Taskbar & Libraries (not that I expected it)

I can't use the email app as it's been broken since day one. (Try using an MS Account linked to real domains). But that should be fine, given the error message it gives and that other stuff like Xbox syncs.

Basically it looks to be syncing with MS Account and it's associated webservices. It's syncing IE favourites, history and logins. But it's only syncing some, not all, of your PC settings/customisation.

That's why it's close, but not close enough...

Yeah its all installed ok in EFI mode, I guess its an issue with the version of amicore used in the H61M-S2PV i tried as the other EFI feature of selecting boot devices from the windows menu work. When you get the rog logo is that while windows is starting up i.e when you have the spinning dots?

This is one of those things that seems obvious at first glance, but it's better that they don't.

I'm sure they will do it in the future, at least as an option when using a device for the first time. It's obvious they haven't done it, because it would be too hard for them in 1.0, doesn't mean they shouldn't.

I get the ROG logo both on the BIOS then on the Windows startup. I can change this back to the default blue Windows logo if I want.

I don't actually think its that difficult, I just don't think it would work. I'm not saying it has zero value but it really isn't worth the effort IMO. I could be wrong though.

I would love for start screen sync.

Spend time getting all my apps in the right place, in named groups, but then to be fair, as you can reset the baseline for the roll back it might be ok, only be a problem moving to new hardware, but as I understand it most drivers need to be classless I believe you should be able to move to new hardware without too much problems
