Windows 8 Consumer Preview Thread

the stuff I used regularly was already on my desktop, I never needed to go near the start menu.

That's bad form. You shouldn't keep shortcuts and stuff on the desktop as it slows the system down at startup when Windows has to check every shortcut points to its file.

I very rarely boot my system from cold, it's usually in sleep.

Bad form or not it worked for me, everything laid out exactly how I wanted it.

it slows the system down at startup when Windows has to check every shortcut points to its file.

Is that actually true?

Well if by splattered you mean organised over 3 screens then yes :-

Left Screen : Work Stuff.

Middle Screen: Personal Stuff

Right Screen : Media stuff.

Now if Metro had allowed me to utilise all 3 screens and start up application on their given display then that would have been better.

Seems to me the Metro stuff has only been designed with a single screen in mind.

Seems to me the tiles are shortcuts. So in effect it does the same thing as a desktop. Conceptually I'm not seeing a lot of difference. They are kinda like live bigger shortcuts. That bit isn't the problem (for me). Its the corners I feel I haven't really got comfy with yet.

Yeah they are just "live colourful icons/shortcuts" (TILES), there is just now another interface between me and my desktop.

@ChileanLlama - You need to complain to nVidia this has nothing whatsoever to do with Microsoft, I seem to remember with Vista, nVidia dragged their heels BADLY on getting decent drivers out of the door.

I have. And I remember - they did.

And it's got everything to do with MS. They are releasing a new OS and should be working with hardware partners to make sure it's as smooth as possible for their own sakes. I'd expect NVidia to be a premier partner and have lots of support...

Re-read my posts again, I might be frustrated, but I've always said MS need to work to get these things fixed so it's a smooth launch, and not give haters reason to dismiss Windows 8. Not just for my own selfish reasons ;)

Actually they are not between you and the desktop, but its an alternate desktop. You can just click to go back to it the regular desktop. The only way it would be between you and the desktop would be if you always go back to the desktop to launch things. That would inefficient in itself. Alt tab or the start menu, quick start or start menu would be more effective, less moving the mouse.

Think of 'Metro' as either a full screen start menu or a desktop for Windows Store apps.

Continue to use your desktop and desktop icons as you do today and forget about 'Metro' for your normal workflow. I guess you could organise the apps into the 3 groupings you mention. But yes at this stage you are limited to 'Metro' being on one monitor only, though you can easily move this from screen to screen, and it will stay in full screen focus even if you're using the desktop.

Give it more time, but don't try and use Metro for the sake of using it. It doesn't replace the desktop.

I turned off all the appearance options under system but I still have a see through taskbar, is there a way to get a basic windows look easily. I dont want taskbar previews either

I just couldn't do without a start button so I downloaded Stardocks beta version of "Start8"

This is what bemuses me. Windows 8 has such excellent search facilities if the program you want isn't pinned to your taskbar or metro screen. Why you need a start button/menu at all is beyond me.

Goddamnit, I'll convert you one way or another, headrat!
