Windows 8 Consumer Preview Thread

What's the point, if your going to do that, stick with windows 7.

Absolutely pointless.

Well some people don't like the Metro UI but would like the other features that 8 brings. For tablets or angled touch-screen monitors, sure, metro is nice.
But not everyone wants, needs or likes the MetroUI.

They want windows 8 for desktop multi-monitor support (stretch task bar and desktop wallpaper across monitors, or replicate across monitors), new virtual and dynamically expandable Storage Spaces, built in Hyper-V, native USB 3.0 support, vastly improved file management, improved Task manager, native/built-in SkyDrive, syncing multiple devices (PCs, Laptops, Tablets) through the cloud, much faster boot times, new "connected standby" low-power mode for laptops AND boot and run from USBKeys/FlashDrives.

Anyone else have any luck with Virtual Machine Additions (Virtualbox)?

Edit: does the server edition have the whole metro thing going on?

I tried it on VMWare Player, set it up as i did the dev preview, but it was asking for the DVD driver or something. Didn't have enough time so i cancelled it.

I successfully used VirtualBox on the developers preview, so give it a try mate.

It does use metro, unless it is in Server Core mode.

I have tried but once VMAdditions installs and reboots it won't start.

Spot on! I don't mind the metro stuff so much. But its just so obnoxiously obtrusive on a desktop! I'm getting used to it but mostly because iv stuck all the things i need on my task bar so i just dont ever have to go into the metro menu lol. Not solved the problem, just avoiding it completely.

Hey guys,

I got a quick question. I have W8 installed on a VM, will it matter using my main microsoft email address on this? It's just I will probably upgrade my main OS to windows 8 and I don't want accounts messed up etc.

It's probably just me being silly but I would just like to know in case :)

Thanks!

Exactly - there are a ton of fantastic new features in Windows 8, so to suggest that you should just stick with Windows 7 because you don't want to use the Metro Start menu is ridiculous.

Personally, for my day to day desktop use I'm finding the Metro Start interface an inconvenience. I don't need the full screen taken up when all I want to is quickly launch an application (by typing the first few characters of its name) or to search for files.

Nope, wont matter at all bud.
Its working through the Host IP anyway, unless you've configured it otherwise.

for those that want to use windows 8 without the metro stuff this is what I did on the dev preview, then made the normal shutdown/restart/logoff buttons too. I preferred it to keep going back and forth with metro. just a thought

.

A lot of the good stuff is very much metro orientated.
This is also a beta. What's the point of disabling the new stuff in a beta.

There's also no point, log in, click desktop as long as you have all your apps pinned to task bar or desktop there's no need to go back to metro unless you want to log off.

Not really, out of all of those that i listed, none are metro-based or dependant.
I understand where your coming from bud, but some people just don't like it, the beta has, however, come a long and have improved it a great deal.

For me, i would consider it usable, and we have got until January 16th 2013 until it expires. That's a long time. :P

If this was the developer preview I'd agree with you - but it's not, so the point is I want to try out the features that I'm actually interested in without the features that I'm not (the Metro Start screen) getting in the way. :)

I don't really want to have to pin every application I use to the taskbar either.

Wow 86" gorilla glass screen/tablet thing. With pen, looks awesome.

I wonder how much persuading my boss it would take for me to get one of those in the office... It would make my job so much easier!:D

I take it the ARM version still hasn't been released yet?:(
