Windows 8 Consumer Preview Thread

is there anyway to add a hotmail account to the messenger app because I used a gmail which isn't my msn for my microsoft account but everytime I click hotmail it says to add a microsoft account

Real stupid question time.
If I have a spare hd can I just install this to it and have the option to boot into it on my machine? Been really wanting to try this out.

I tried it, disliked it, took me 15 minutes to work out how to shut down with the mouse, also my mouse jitters if my hand is resting on it (R.A.T 5) works fine with 7 and could not fix it, tried drivers and turned off pointer precision once I found the option, it's just so cumbersome in operation and I will be avoiding it at release for sure.

Is there a way to bet rid of the flick up image before you enter the log in password? Find thid particularly annoying is using a keyboard and mouse.

If you make a "local account" you can make it boot straight to desktop like old windows. No live ID login (you can change to local account in "User Accounts" in the control panel) .... If you can find the control panel!!:p

Disconnect all other drives and do a clean install. Then connect back any other drives, including any other Windows installs. Then you can simply select your boot drive from BIOS (most usually have a quick select feature) without Windows 8 messing with your boot manager.

There is meant to be an option to boot from USB penstick - called Windows To Go - but I haven't found how to do this yet.

I got the download, have been playing with it and honestly I am very disappointed. For phones/tablets its going to do pretty well but for desktops its a mess.

Apprantly the server version does also have metro *le sigh*

glad i wasnt the only one then

Failed at 3.1 out of 3.3 gb. Is there a way I can resume this, guess I will look for a torrent :o

If you haven't found one yet, it is best to use a download manager, which will pick up where you left off as it were.

Someone mentioned a program called Net Transport earlier, but I used one which I thought came with Microsoft Internet Explorer 9 called BIT something or other.

I was pleased that I did as mine also failed at about one third of the way through, but a couple of clicks, and it was off again... only took nine and a half hours to download! :)

Now to 'burn' a DVD!

Some quick thoughts…

I really wasn't sold at first. I couldn't get Zune to sign in, I found general navigation and having to relearn how to get around a pita and my printer wasn't being recognised.

However. New morning, new month and I've had a new look.

Zune is now working and I've access to all my music off my win 7 partition. Zune is seeing my phone great too.
My printer is now working (had to go in via advanced printer from old control panel)
And... I'm now not only comfortable with the new way of working I'm actually starting to prefer it...

I'm not sure that metro works alongside the traditional desktop, it feels a bit like windows mob 6 to me but I can see how it's absolutely necessary in this release. Windows 9 I can see a compatibility mode then Windows 10 they'll probably drop the old desktop all together.

Things I'm loving...

Automatic spell checking, even in this dialogue box! At last!
My desktop is finally useful after being clean and empty for years. I'm used to tiles and I've rearranged them to my liking and I think it's great.
Auto logging into SkyDrive and my Hotmail account.
A lot of the built in apps are buggy but there are no deal breakers and I think I'll have a go at using this as my main OS for a while.
