Windows 8 Consumer Preview Thread

I will end up getting it and upgrading but only because of the performance, behind the screen changes.

I just think Metro on the PC is a waste. Why do I need to install the Wikipedia app when I can simply just browse to Wikipedia? :p Why do I need to use the eBay app when if I want to say, contact the buyer of an item i'm selling, it sends me off to Chrome and the full ebay site to do so?

It's stuff like that which seems a bit pointless to me but obviously they are aiming for the 'One OS' so I can understand the functionality being there.

Due to live tiles, admittedly only on certain things. I can see myself being in metro a fair bit, once some good apps our out.
Reverse of what you said, why open a webpages or software when I can see what I need in a live time be it email, Callander, weather, messenger or what ever wmelse might be usefull.
Also some apps just work better than the website, mainly BBC news/Iplayer, but they arent on wondows though.

Metro is great for media and quick info and I will be using it for that, one key combo I can flick to and back out of it and see tons of information. In desktop for software/non metro games it's also brilliant and the "missing start menu" isn't an issue at all. Right click where start menu use to be or metro with its far better search covers everything.

I use Logmein to create a VPN to do this, so not checked whether there's any improvements in Windows itself.

Yeah I use Logmein but much prefer just using remote desktop. Trying out TeamViewer at the moment which seems decent but I don't see the need to install software if I can do it within windows. I only want remote access, have no need for file transferring, etc.

Email i'll use and that's one of the good things.

So looks like all the apps are due an update before release but is it just me that thinks the inbuilt messenger app should support file sending to truly get rid of the need for live messenger or do you think there going to pin all that on the new skype app thats been leaked. As the skype beta already supports mesenger log in etc.

hope they let you pre-download win8 then await the key, the servers are going to be hammered.
i know most people don't like it but a lot of people will still download it.

While hammered, I think they should be ok, MS have a lot of mirrors though Akami or something like that, not to mention they have shed loads of bandwidth

Even downloading my full pro version was quite slow and that was just from dreamspark I would not want to be downloading it on release day.

Has anyone here tried to install the Intel SSD Tool box on windows 8 yet? Have tried 3.0.3 and 3.0.5 and have not managed to install it even with compatibility settings. I know it's not officially supported by Intel's SSD tool box yet but was wondering if anyone had gotten it to work.

Cheers

anyone else getting error messages with mail, messaging and people apps this morning in the RTM version?

 if true :D

A number of web sites have been tracking how many Windows 8 "Modern" apps have been made available in the Windows Store since the RTM version of the OS was completed in August. The most optimistic report claimed that there are currently over 3,000 apps available in the store. While well below the numbers for iOS, Android and even Windows Phone, that's still pretty good for an OS that's won't officially launch for over two more weeks.

But does Microsoft have a ton of Windows 8 apps waiting in the wings? That seems to be the claim from Keith Lorizio, the vice-president of US Sales and Marketing at Microsoft. In a video interview with Beet.tv, conduced during last week's Advertising Week event in New York City, Lorizio says that Microsoft is targeting for Windows 8 to have 100,000 apps available within the first 90 days of its launch.

That's a rather ambitious number. After all, it took Windows Phone nearly two years to reach the 100,000 app mark. On the other hand, Windows 8 will be installed in a much larger number of devices (desktops, notebooks, hybrids) than Windows Phone so perhaps Lorizio's prediction may not be completely crazy.

Lorizio also predicted that Windows 8 would have 400 million users by July 2013. He said that Windows 8 was going to be a success because of its "massive distribution", along with giving the user the same experience across all devices in the Microsoft family (Windows 8, Windows Phone and Xbox 360).

Also don't forget that 100,000 apps on Windows phone I would imagine a great number of them can be converted over to Metro

400 million users? I assume they're counting businesses that buy PC's with Windows 8 pre-installed in that figure despite the fact most will probably downgrade to Windows 7.

Yes, I can't quite believe the 400 million users either. Maybe they reckon with people upgrading, people buying new devices (tablets as well as notebooks etc) and the people who buy and downgrade gets them to that amount but I have my doubts. Even on this forum quite a lot of people have said they won't be upgrading. It will be interesting to see how many have been sold by July 2013.
